Interesting points - many thanks! The rims are Mavic X517 (quite narrow at about 23mm wide). I can imagine narrow rims pull in the beads of the tyre closely together, perhaps making the carcass wobble around under turning load more than wide rims would. From my very amateur observations the issue of slipping due to lack of grip is secondary to a sort of lurching feeling as the sidewalls of the tyre deviate one side or the other as I turn the forks - quite disconcerting at speed and an accident waiting to happen. I'm sure a pair of reinforced sidewall DH tyres would reduce this squirming effect but my legs are puny enough as it is without pushing round 1kg of rubber on each wheel so I'll try to find something a bit more of a compromise I think. WTB Velociraptors do look a good price, I'll check them out.
