havent the navaras been eating engines?

i can honestly say that they all get thrashed at the work and we have had them from new with little to no problems (mainly woman driving into them) there quite basic inside but are comfy and good offroad too :D

Well if you a 4x4 mitsubishi sets the benchmark .... I've driven a lot of 110's and had a Disco and mitsubishi just blows them away for the transfer box

There were some problems with the d22 Navaras,

We use pickups for work - I had a d40 which was superb until that died in a contaminated fuel issue, not the trucks fault though. If you can stretch to a d40 they are probably the pick of the pick ups. I now run an L200 which is ok but I'd certainly prefer having the navara back. Ford Rangers, realistically, are thirsty as fook and there's been some reliability issues too. Hilux's are nice but bloody expensive, and I've heard good things about Isuzus too.

One thing to bear in mind too - what are you generally going to be using the vehicle for? Our pickup's great for shifting soil and other dirty materials in, but pretty damn useless if I've got to go shopping with the mrs and two kids, for example. Also factor in a realistic mpg of 30mpg and £700 for a set of four tyres...... We've had a Transporter before which was great but couldn't tow very much efficiently (think 3t trailer!!), which was why we got a pick up, totally reliable though even after 175k miles.

Mike

The Ford Ranger has horrendous MPG. One of they boys in work had a Thunder and it nearly bankrupted him. :(

What about the Mercedes Vito, we run these in work and once you get used to the 'hand brake' actually a 'foot brake' they're pretty good. Take a look at the VIP version very bling. I'd also consider a VW Transporter T5 or the older T4. I know someone who actually buys the old AA type vans and gives them a total 'pimp my ride' makeover. He is also a surfing ninja though

As for Estates my neighbours got the Volvo XC70 which I'm rather fancying myself. Got up the hill leading to my house in the snow with ease, and that hills a right b*tch at this time of year.

If you're looking for just a capable 4x4 and a lot of bang for your buck then you cant go wrong with the Kia Sorrento XS 2.5 TDi, 7 year warranty on these now. I've owned two in the past and never had anything go wrong with them. Pretty cheap 2nd hand and should be able to get a top spec '06 for less than £10K. One of my fathers mates actually traded his '05 plate M Class Merc in for a new one of these as he was so p*ssed off with Mercs reliabilty.

for fun i had a hilux:

Isn't the focus/Volvo 1.6 the citreon engine?
I've got a Skoda octavia 4x4 estate. 43mpg without trying and big enough for bike duties. Way better built tha previous French cars. It's been fantastic in the snow of late too.

5 cylinder version is Volvo, no idea what the smaller ones are.

i'm saving for a transporter T5, decided that was the best option for everything. going for a panel van then converting to suit what i want, the conversion isn't going to cost anywhere near as much as i thought it would.

i thought about navara's etc aswel but the main reason i decided on a van was to beable to put the bikes inside in a sensible way, having them on the roof of a car i worry about them being nicked and inside the car they just cause mess and mark everything. i felt that the navara's etc didn't solve those problems.

i'm gonna convert my van to a multi van style meaning insulating/sound proofing the rear, fitting side windows in the mid section, then fitted seats and carpeting throughout.

And I think that's the best way to go too. A van is much more versatile than a pick-up (unless you need one for their intended purpose) and you can fit the panel van out to exactly suit your requirements.

That's much the same as I did when I was racing sled dogs - I divided it with dog compartments at the back (with extra air vents etc) and seating/sleeping space at the front. You can build in all sorts of custom stowage for clean and dirty equipment etc.
Some other people used converted pick-ups, which were fine for carrying the dogs but they didn't have the (comparitive) luxury of somewhere clean and dry to change and make a brew, which in the middle of a cold, wet forest was a huge advantage  .

.

I've steered clear of Navara's as we have one at work and the fuel consumption is alarming to say the least. I have been lead to believe the 2.5 tdci ranger is a bit better? I don't really want to go as big as a T5.
Sorrento is a good shout i'll look into that, and also the Octavia estate.
A guy at work said his Mondeo estate has been fantastic, not sure aboiut the laters ones(his is an 05) but my old mans dual mass clutch has just killed his 52
