Trek SS project (completed)

Retro Guru
I have always wanted to build a single speed trail bike from a newer aluminum beach cruiser and this thread will be my lessons learned and cost. I found the bike I was looking for on craigslist and traded an old tv that was laying around the house :D

Lesson #1 I didn't want a coaster brake so I started to look at hub and rim choices. Beach cruisers have a rear hub spacing of 110mm so I was thinking a bmx hub with 26" rims. Come to find they are not that common but I did find a pair on Ebay with a flip flop hub. On order $179.00

Other items on order: Triple butted aluminum forks $65.00. May change to Surly Big Dummy
Origin 8 square taper cranks 175mm $50.00
FSA 34T chainring $35.00
FSA 1 1/8 threadless headset $45.00

So here is what I am starting with. I wanted this frame because it's aluminum and I liked the look of the tubes and how well they were welded.

Re: Trek SS project

Another delivery today :D Very happy with the quality of these parts. I changed the chain ring to Vuelta instead of FSA.

Re: Trek SS project

Headset installed. Getting ready to cut steerer tube. I think this is going to turn out pretty good.

Re:

New cranks installed. They line up nicely with the rear.

I am digging deep into spares and came up with some old Avid V's that will go on the front. Not sure what I'm doing on the back. I am thinking of a disc adapter that goes on the flop side of the hub and a creative bracket.

More items on order:
3 cog 18t freewheel $29.00
Origin8 black seat post $25.00

This looks pretty cool!

Thanks, I'm having fun with it. It's surprisingly lite and should be an interesting ride with the relaxed head angle. This is my first venture into single speed and i am probably a little crazy to turn a beach cruiser into a SS trail bike.
