Trade: Red avid levers, canti for v.

I am sure some one will know for sure.

My understanding is the top ones (like yours) have a v chip, as was said you can use them with cantis and v's by adjusting the speed dial. They just dont work quite as well as the dedicated V levers like the bottom ones.

Sorry to keep bumping the thread

As elpedro says above, the length of the lever has nothing to do with which type of brake it's for; as he says it's the distance from the lever pivot to the cable anchor point, typically 25mm for canti's and 30mm for V's.

I think you'll find both of the levers pictured above are for V's, which Avid introduced in '92 incidentally, with an adjustment between 21-28mm.

Just for once I'm not being a smartarse either; until very recently I had been getting it wrong since the year dot, then I made a complete knob of myself on another thread and learned the hardway...

All the info I've just Googled points to these being V-brake levers; if you adjust the anchor on the dial so that it's at the top (closest to the dial) the brakes should feel much better?

When I pointed out the levers were interchangeable I didn't mean the physical length of the lever was the issue, more the part that fits inside the body of the brake and grasps the cable.

If you have experience to say otherwise I would not disagree (and like I said the V chip will enable the use of both v's and cantis) but the 2.0L lever was introduced in 97 to go with the tri align 3 V's introduced the same year.

From what I hear the V chip sd type levers (like yours) still feel a bit spongy despite adjustment.

They wouldn't feel 'spongy' if they were canti' levers, he'd be laying on the floor looking back at his bike from upside down!

For years I was convinced I'd had V-brake STi's on my cro-mega BITD because I was under the impression it was the position of the cable anchor that made the difference; I didn't realise it was the distance from pivot to anchor that governed the pull. I was blinded by my own experiences, convinced that the brakes worked just fine...

...but now I have reverted to canti's on my cro-mega and my Kili I've realised just how crap the V's on my 8-speed STi-equipped Lavadome are!

Conversly, I am running XT V's on my 853 Explosif with 1-finger DiaComp Dirty Harry BMX levers via Problem Solver Travel Agents... 8)

Is it wrong that I'm very tempted to run canti levers with Vs...? Could work well for a trials bike

 You may be right!

Instead of "spongy" Sheldon Brown describes it better:

Old short-pull lever (canti) with new direct pull ("V type") brake.

The excessive mechanical advantage of this combination will make it difficult to modulate the brake, and it may be all too easy to lock up the wheel.

The lever feel will be very soft and mushy.

The lever will travel too far before engaging the brake, and it may bottom out against the handlebar. Thus, the brake may be super-powerful at first, but as the brake shoes wear, the lever's bumping up against the handlebar will prevent full application. This is likely to be a particular problem in wet conditions.

Don't forget the adjustment of the speed dial will/may have lessened the effect in this case.

I would say the L (in SD 2.0L) stands for Linear. Hence why it was released with the V brakes in 1997.

Again, apologies for debate I just want you to get the best brakes (or me to be put right) :

Says '92 here:-

http://www.sram.com/avid/history/the-avid-story

...at least it's keeping the subject up where people can see it

it does say that I cant disagree. BUT (unless I am being massively stupid), V brakes came out in 1996 after Shimano introduced them.

I dont know why sram would say 1992, either an error or the were unreleased until 97 (as per mombat)

...and they have the Speed Dial lever coming out in '94, which was never a canti' lever??

(says '97 on the weightweenies website...)
