Today's Ride

Setting myself up for another month of potential misery. Day two of my promise to myself to ride my fixie at least ten miles every day in December - whatever the weather.
I swear it gets harder every year - some inappropriate hills this morning - and the bike gets uglier. View attachment 1023579

That's a hell of a challenge to set yourself! The closest I've come is to ride a different bike every day for a week -- and haven't achieved that yet, either. Also, please tell us more about that stem -- there's a thread starting up for That Sort of Thing.

Fair play mate, my weekly mileage aim is 100 and that's been a bit of a struggle due to the season let alone 70 a week on fixed, good luck! In lieu of longer rides I've turned to the dark side and went KOM hunting instead. Grabbed one on a short uphill last week and I'm pretty sure the guy I knocked off top spot proceeded to flag it for cheating 😂 Got up to around 33mph on a flat sprint today and thought maybe with a tailwind taking #1 would be possible, checked the leaderboards when I got home and the top spots were taken by an assortment of names like Enrico Battaglin, Anders Johannessen, Matteo Jorgenson etc during the 2022 Tour of Britain - gonna need one hell of a tailwind to beat those!

37.67 miles/60.62km with 2411ft/734m elevation today. Sunny but slightly chilly, lot of the backroads flooded. Went and gave Silverhills a crack - #159 from Simon Warrens Another GCC book. 1.4 Miles, max of 15%, average of 5%, got up it in 8:56. Definitely gonna try for a better time as I thought it started way later than it actually did, plus two cars coming head on mid climb didn't help.

Mate, the key to claiming KOMs is to create your own segments in places no other rider ever goes. I have done this twice, and currently occupy the top ten times on both. All my own effort, no cheating at all!

First outside ride in over 2 weeks thanks to the weather gods finally playing mercy with me. 6-7 degree start before shifting to a chilly 3-4 once I was over the moors heading for big town. Thermals on. Damp and wet in places, plenty of autumnal debris. High cloud, mainly clear skies. Pretty dark until the final few miles when the sunrise began in the distance. Light 5-6 WSW breeze.

After some discussion upthread I've decided I want to ride a different bike every day for the next six days. I have to go on a bit of a trip after that, which gives a natural deadline; meanwhile, the weather report promises warm, dry and relatively calm days. And I can't go running due to a persistent bruised heel, so in defiance of Lance's book title, it is all about the bike(s).

Today ended up being a bit rushed, as various calls and visits kept delaying my departure, and I had another bloody tedious Teams meeting planned for 7pm. I headed out on the Jake for a swift 38km jaunt around some local roads, surprising myself with clutch of Strava segment PBs. But that meant not stopping to take pics, I'm afraid. Hoping to get out on the '99 Explosif tomorrow for a little off-road fun.
