Bit of a stopping spot for the atv riders who use these trails. The sad thing is the amount of garbage they (and the homeless who camp out here) leave for me to remove for shots like these, and from my riverside rambles.

Here’s an autumnal scene. As there’s no ‘mushrooms and bikes’ thread (yet, admittedly that would be very seasonal), I thought I would share this here. It’s a rather fine parasol mushroom. Also, this follows on from the nice fungi content from @Betsy on this thread a while back. I am something of a fungi-spotter, and that includes on my rides this time of year.

I used to live adjacent to a woodland for 17yrs so i did lots of mushroom hunting.. now i'm more of a city-boy, less so..

Yup, I have that Roger Phillips book too. Quite often my heart sinks as I open a section and I’m reminded that there are seemingly endless species that all look extremely similar. Sometimes I’ve managed to correctly ID a few tricky ones (at least, that’s what I think). I do also use my phone for that, but it’s very hit and miss.

Sometimes I’ve managed to correctly ID a few tricky ones (at least, that’s what I think). I do also use my phone for that, but it’s very hit and miss.

The weird and wonderful ones are easy-peasy to ID.. the more mundane are quite the opposite.. sadly, the ones that turn your internal organs to mush don't look too far removed from young field mushrooms..

It's just some awful trick mother nature likes to play on us..

Today’s ride was really very good.
The trail we intended to do was closed off.
So explored this track and that one
Wiggle climb climb wiggle.

The single track in the beech woods is now covered with leaves, so way-finding is rather hilarious, a sort of I THINK it’s this way crunch crunch AH no….

It has rained a lot in the last days, and also some strong wind made a mess in the parks in the city...
Nevertheless, I rode about 1,5 hrs through the autumn landscape.











... and with a therapeutic happy end!

I rode out to Jodrell Bank today to take a look. It wasn’t the most scenic ride, but it was worth it for this impressive sight. Unfortunately I couldn’t really get a good photo of the front of the big radio telescope, though.

On the way back through Knutsford I happened to go down a road where part of the Empire of the Sun film was shot. It only features briefly, but you can see why they chose the location. It’s strange to think Spielberg spent some time here.



I also spotted plenty of fungi again, including these trooping funnels.
