Today's Ride

Neighborhood trails under smoky skies.
I don't know if breathing this stuff is a great thing for my physical health, but I needed to work on mental health today 20250606_130707.webp
Had to take the chance, last urban planning meeting showed the public new plans for putting a road through here 20250606_131818.webp
That's bad news for me and Mr Beaver 20250606_131550.webp

Onespeed is still the fastest way to The Zone for me. Everything dropped away in minutes

Today I did some clearing of the basement. Rode my unfortunately to small for me ABM Breezer (complete DX build) to the shop down the hill. Gifted it to a well deserving mechanic who was pumped.
Easy come, easy go and good to see it’s going to be well loved.
Bike = joy. Isn’t that what these mechanical contraptions are all about?
Wow! luckiest mechanic on the planet that day!! What a generous thing to do!

Nothing evil about riding in Barbadoes Wood with tina - plenty of climbing, but lately the Welsh forestry NRW are keen on laying 50mm+ stone chippings, which Tina finds unrideable and I can barely manage.

One of the routes near me, well more of a shortcut than anything was gravelled over recently with some of the largest chunks of aggregate I've ever seen. Makes sense as said route provides vehicular access to farms/turbine/water facilities, but taking the route without being aware of the recent resurfacing on 25mm tyres made for a quick meeting with the floor!

Inbred out on some shopping duties early this morning, after months being a roadie I'd forgotten how sluggish mtb feels in comparison and I have to question how I was doing 60+ mile rides regularly on them not too long ago. Half tempted to put drops on it.

Yesterday’s problem was a section of downhill bridleway that had been “improved” with chunks of broken brick. I couldn’t stay on my bike, the combination of clay already on my tyres and a dusting of rain meant I just slid everytime I hit a flat bit of brick.

Yep, much the same here. As far as I know one of the main paths up the fields here was backfilled probably 20 maybe 30 odd years ago with the rubble/hardcore/etc from a farm demolition. Seems fine in practice but 30 year later and the amount of walkers, horses, cyclists, quads/atvs, dirt bikes, in some cases cars and now surrons and the like it's essentially a moderately downhill minefield run. Been unceremoniously ejected more than a handful of times over the years misjudging it.

Got out on the Bianchi and made it back just in time to dodge the rain. 27.33 miles, 1599ft elevation in 1h32m. No ride pictures, best I can offer is a picture of it in the stand after replacing the tired rear Ultegra mech with 105. Now have capacity for 34 on the back but I think the furthest I'd go is 32. Tried some generic gels I picked up from HomeBargains this morning also, branded "SciFit" in a blue raspberry flavour, bit more fluidlike compared to Sis and certainly not bad for 89p a pop.

What year/model is it? Looks nice for a modern Carrera! Would be half tempted to put drops on it, looks like it'd make a nice cx/gravel etc ride.
I'm not sure. It's the 27.5 subway so around 2019/2020 I think. Was going to be scrapped but I saved it and rebuilt it with better components. I can't ride drop bars any more after developing chronic pain syndrome in 2020 but for a bike that cost me £20 to build I love it.

Cool 13 degress, felt like 10 but got sweaty going up the steep ramps around here. Solid cloud, 10mph WSW breeze for some extra e-bike esque torque-boost. The legs felt great, the air was fresh, and nature...or bunnies and deer to be precise, were all over the place 🤣

The highest point around, looking all the way back to Lands End on the left.
