Today's Ride

I think i clipped the sharp pointy end of a big flint. It's astonishing how much stuff I've destroyed on the flints round here.

Also got stung twice on the throat by a wasp on the same ride. Still, i did collect a haul of Strava cups so it's all worth it. 🤡
Ah flint.

In the 1990s, on a brand new Klein, going off the left from the SDW just before Firle Beacon I did a flying mile down into the hidden valleys...always exciting. Not so pleasurable was the huge dull thunk halfway down, and the flint which came up from the front wheel had pushed a 4 cm divot in the downtube. First effing ride out. That REALLY out me off coke can Californian tube sets. Light, yes. But overstiff and SO fragile.

Recently, downhilling in CH, bang. crunch, bang, goes the tube protector on the carbon Transition as the rocks fly up. Oh how times have changed. Modern rigs are STRONG.

and the wasps...tedious

it's always fun to be barrelling along and see a small dot coming then, BAM on the helmet or BBBBBZZZZZTTTTT into the helmet vent or straight down the shirt - which prompts rapid panic braking and much flapping

The flints are a nightmare. There's the puncture risk followed by the loss of control/crash, rim damage etc etc. I moved to Sussex after living for 8 years in the rockiest part of rocky rugged North Wales. I never broke a thing there. Within a month of moving to Sussex I'd trashed a dozen tyres.

Tonight's ride. I never thought I'd say it, but the tarmac seems safer. A brisk 30 mile spin up into the Weald. It's getting dark so early, but great to get out. 20251017_172608.webp 20251017_172818.webp 20251017_172820.webp 20251017_172826.webp 20251017_175950.webp
