i keep seein bike after bike at my local council tip ... breaks my heart to see them layin there .. lookin at me all sorryful . I asked about liberating them but the tip gestapo said IT WOULD BE BREAKIN THE RULES . What rules , whats the punishment , how bad can it be , how flexible are the rules . is there a good way of takin out the cctv system ? How does LGF do it ?

Once stuff is in the tip it is the property of the council. If the staff give or sell stuff then that is theft for them and handling stolen goods for you. It stinks, but that's how it is. If they say they won't or can't then i'd leave it at that, untill new people arrive! At the end of the day you are asking them to risk their job.i accept the rules are stupid, especially in these days of going green and recycling but its their job! I liberated my first bike from a tip at the weekend. My van was parked in front of the cameras and i offered beer instead of cash!

It depends on your council's policy. My local tip (East Dorset) has even got a kind of showroom!
Good stuff is always put to one side, then anyone visiting can make a bid. It's a system that works well for all.
The council even saves on landfill volume and costs.

A lot of recycling centres have resale areas.

If you really want the bike, contact the local council first to confirm the rules on the resale of recycled goods. There are strict HSE laws regarding the resale of electrical goods. Technically, you're not even allowed to buy a pair of speakers.

Bicycles should be ok if you ask nicely.

My local recycling centre is privately run under contract with the local council.

ive found out where the "scrap" metal goes to on its next stop , paid them a visit and apparently the system there is a lot more relaxed, they said they frequently come across bikes of all shapes and sizes. The guy there seemed more than willing to cooperate. While i was there i saw an old folding bike and a lugged roadie. Im thinkin if i pop in maybe once a week they may put stuff on one side that maybe of interest. Who knows .. might be a waste of time , might not...... watch this space ...
What interesting bits have any of you guys rescued ?
