tIB's Custom Pace RC300 build

Well that was more frustrating than Id hoped! Chain snapped again- found the issue, Id been too careful with tightening the front mech. Then plagued by shifter issues- gripshift had too much sideways play (fixed), front shifter was shifting off the ring on one of the three (ie it was floating on the chainring as opposed to finding where it is supposed to be. Went home, switched bikes and forgot my tools/drink so settled for a shorter ride than I wanted.

Confused on the crank thing- it did used to do a bit of that on the orange although I found a knack! Ive seperated the chainrings and removed the spacers (which look too wide to me- will try and find some thinner ones) but still getting issues on the lower ring now as opposed to the middle. Will be a couple of days before I can fix it now, boo!

The good news is when you are in bloody gear it really shifts!

Why do you have these issues as i have never had them in the past but then again i've never mixed grip shift with none grip shift parts before ..

I've never had that before either- bizzare! Gripshift won't Ave anything to do with it- it will either be the chainring or front mech setup. I'll do some reading while away and hope to get sorted shortly... In my head it has the wrong size spacers, in reality I suppose the spacing of the crank might be the issue given they were originally for 8 speed. Can't see it making that much of an issue though. It's probably the mech set up!

Well the front shifter mech does seem a possible issue or the bottom bracket could be the wrong size as that would throw the chain line out for the front mech in theory .,

I hadn't thought of that... the whole setup is a bit wonky let's face it (road rings, MTB gearing), I'll do some reading and keep my fingers crossed that it is something easy (and free) to sort!

Ah, might it be that the rings aren't indexed...?

Oh boy! I hadn't thought of that as a none indexed ring i should imagine would be a little thicker than indexed and make for a tight fit with an indexed chain causing it to stick and would require more force from the mech in order to move it off the ring or so the theory goes ..

Im pretty sure my chain rings arent aligned so Im going to re-rebuild, potentially with some thinner spacers... hopefully that and a bit of patient front mech play should get it going, although it wont be until the end of the week.

Well some things you just can't rush so fingers crossed swapping the original spacers out for thinner ones plus tweaking the front mech will sort out the issue and their'll be no more snapped chains ;) ..

Finally got around to this- rebuilt crank, repositioned and tweaked front mech, shifters, rear mech and re-oiled chain... I'm much closer but have ordered some 0.6 spacers which I think will sort it proper. Will have a ride tomorrow to see how the changes have helped...
