Can't afford two bikes at present, so considering running three wheel sets,

One Regular treaded for mtbing,

One with slicks for my commute...

Can i run a third with a single cog for a sort of single speed using the middle chainring on my crankset, or will i have chainline problems?

If i can get the spacing right can i just miss the rear derailer or just use the top pulley or will that not work?

not sure any real problems with this, but, not sure why you would want to?

You will still have shifters/mechs/chainlength/cables etc. Its just like running a geared bike in one gear unless I have misunderstood.. :?

Ditto.

IMO the main benefit of singlespeed is to save weight by getting rid of mechs, shifters etc. So, in effect, all you would be doing is leaving it in one gear and not gaining any real benefit :?

Viz Top Tip: To run a single speed without making expensive changes to your bicycle, simply don't change gear.

;)

Ok, you've just caused my whole office to question whey I just burst out laughing!!

If you were to race in a Single speed event, the marshals would insist on disabling your gear selection options.
Saying that you honestly wouldn't change gear as you raced would not go down well.
Single speeding really needs a dedicated bike as changing the mechanical set up of your steed every time the mono gear mania sets in is a tad tedious. Build up a cheapo clunker, single speeds are the easiest creatures to create and offer big grins !

Cheers

One option you could try, I used to do in medium gear TT events, is screwing down the adjusters of the front and rear mechs.

Really just wanted to give it a go, could be leaving the country in june, so second bike purchase isn't an option. Might have an old tenant's bike that could be converted though.

Challenge - Make a single speed bike out of parts donated by other members..

I have a front wheel you can have for cost of postage..
Plus I'll chuck in an old sugino chainset and canti brakes and a saddle ...

You have to source the rest of the bike before I'll send though....
