The Retrobike Wiki Project

Great, you found out how to put back the categories. Not that difficult, is it? :-)

Making tables is easy, I use an existing table as template, edit the content in excel and just copy the code from excel to the wiki article.

But its more difficult creating a table and takes more time than just creating content by writing text.

Cant you start with just creating articles and writing?

Added the workshop and weenie categories back to the front page and made it so you can see them instead of hidden away at the side I hardly noticed.

Why are you using manual list for the manufacturers and not an auto-populating category ?

Because I wanted a list of red links to articles that are yet to be created. Categories are not like that, you have to create the articles and add the code for the particular category you want the article to be listed in, for the articles to get listed in that category.

How are templates used ?
Seems a bit like Cut&Paste from an existing one rather than click a button to insert it. Anything more sophisticated that can be added to do the editing ? WYSIWYG?
It currently seems quite a large step backward and might be why people are finding it initially quite daunting ? Even forums have proper editors now with AJAX sophistication or whatever they are now using to do that same thing ?

As for the tables, I've found how to make them sortable, but they need to be easily added to by the members here, preferably without a how to lesson to do it. The reason that's what I was doing is John wanted it moved across and off this forum.

I have no experience with templates or automatic methods for transferring material. If you want to learn how they work then feel free to doo that, I have a job besides all my other activities and have no time to take a 4-year programming degree to create these templates.

We need to start creating articles, it is really not that big of a deal. I have created a few, started on a category structure, edited alittle on the front page. I hear that you did not like that very much...

If more RB users chip in and create for example one article per week (or day) over the summer we will have gotten a long way by the time people return from the holiday. I will also be adding articles then, work on the wiki structure, help with editing etc. More advanced features can be added to this wiki as we move along, templates, tables etc.

The first thing we need I think is a positive, can-do attitude. I wonder how we can manage that. We also need to remember that wikis are living projects. It will never be completed or finished.

kind regards,
MM

+1

Need to pull my finger out and start typing.

I hate to use the term but this is a big society project we should all be a part of. Great idea starting it and I'll be sure to add to it. Come on folks... We all love typing about our favourite brands parts and people on here, why not get stuck in on the wiki!

Thanks to all for the work on this thus far. Good to have mtbmaniac on board who is an experienced wikipedia editor. This should be an excellent resource in tandem with the existing material in the archive and on the forum.

Certainly quite a learning curve on adding material to the wiki, however sure we can surmount this. The wiki is certainly the best way to store and present a lot of the knowledge on the forum.
