Hello to everyone, I am planning on buying one STS 1000, but I am a little worried about what to look for on this bikes. There is any red flag that I should look for? This thermo plastic frames are rideable? or are kind of fragile? Thank you

Check all the joints for hairline cracks. Perfectly rideable

Recently inherited my brothers old STS DH frame. I would love to get it back up & running, but honestly I have no experience with building mtb’s so I know I’m in over my head! All seems to be in good condition (just muddy/dusty). I also have (from its former glory days) a set of Manitou X-Vert forks and Mavic D521 Rims. Front Vbrake may be salvageable but the rear is not. If I do ever manage to get it riding again, it would mostly be used for XC and canal cruising, I’m not too fussed about parts being period-correct at this point. So I have a couple of questions for you all:
Is there anywhere in the UK that still sells parts for these or am I at the mercy of eBay?
What groupset would you all recommend? Do I need anything specific to fit on my current rear hub?.
Aside from the obvious (tyres/brakes/groupset/headset/stem/bars) is there anything else that I should be adding to my shopping list?
How easy/feasible is it to upgrade to discs? I’ve seen a few mentions about the internal cable holes being a problem (?) and finally, am I insane for even attempting this as a first project?

Take a close look at the bottom bracket area. There is a rubber cover for accessing the internal cables. Those frames were prone to crack around there.

About the groupset: I'd go for XTR M951 as a mainstay. Or the same year XT equivalent. Some fancy square taper crankset (NOT that spline BS).

I have a STS DH also. A 1997

Looks great. Doesn’t look like you are missing anything important. No seat post clamp but that’s an easy buy. If the original bushings are smooth, I’d leave them. Bearing upgrade is sweet but a PITA to fit.
Looks like it already has a bolt on disc adapter, just in 22(?) mm Hayes size. Personally I’d leave it V brake.

Cable routing is “fun”. If you can help it, don’t remove any that are there and tape the ends so they don’t pull back through. When it’s time to fit the new one, tape them together and gently pull the new one through. If you don’t have a cable in place there are a few methods.
My technique was to use modelling wire. It’s stiff and can be straightened. Push though from the rear holes then guide out the front holes via the head tube space. Tape the new cable on and carefully pull through. Make sure its threaded through the shifter and front portion of outer first though. Don’t ask why I’m mentioning that obvious point

Loving this setup! It’s been so long since this bike was running but I do remember many of these components from back then.. the azonic riser bars & shorty stem, shimano XTR derailleur & brakes, even the same crank arms.. guessing a lot of this stuff was standard issue with the frame? .. either that or huge coincidence
