Tensioning a disc drive

As per any wheel, disk drive or normal spokes the key to wheel strength will always be uniform spoke tension, or in this case cord tension. So check the sheet doesnt have any overly slack, or overly tight areas. If your not ploughing through rock gardens & stick to more groomed smoother flowing trails then it should hold up okay with limited use. Given how rare (& expensive) working disk drives are becoming I'd personally save it for special occasion dry rides a few times a year. I've got a few disk drives, if I rode them like I ride my modern bikes they'd last a few days...

Sounds like your disk wheel has had very limited use. If you ever need a rebuild I massively recommend a Hugi Compact hub as the loud freehub noise is amplified through the disk & makes it sound even more amazing, as anyone who attended the plymouth round of the Grundig world cup where Ned Overend came 2nd will remember :)

Re:

Brilliant - thanks so much for this - exactly what I was after.

The tension in the cords seems pretty uniform, but not particularly tight (I can press each cord in 5-6mm fairly easily).

I might give this chap in exmouth a call and see what he recommends.

But ultimately yes this will be for show purposes and for the occasional spin on light trails / road - it is just too darn expensive and rare to start ripping about the nearest black run pretending I'm Tomac...
