Swapping Shimano DT gear lever internals?

Before I start messing, does anyone know if it's possible? I have two sets of 6400 gear levers, one is 7 speed, one is 8. The levers themselves on the 7 speed ones are excellent condition, the 8 speed ones aren't. But I'd like to use the 8 speed ones... So, is it possible to swap the internals? Or are they pressed/riveted/bonded in place somehow?

Something I've pondered myself, I wondered if the silver part that goes on the frame has the notches for the indexing? I've got plenty of spares to play with so I might look into it.

Yes the service instructions don't ever show the actual innards separately from the main lever, which makes me think that it's not possible. But maybe someone has managed to do it?

I reckon they're sealed, you'd have to prise them apart and you'd probably ruin them. The way they feel, I reckon they have small ball bearings in them for smooth running a bit like the tricolour brake calipers

Hi Andy it can be done but you have a 50/50 chance of snapping the locking tab underneath the screw hole I did 2 one broke one survived it was putting it back together when it broke.
