Right, time to own up - I accidentally bought a bottom normal rear mech for m'lady, which is gonna confuse the bejeeses outta her

It's an m760 long cage and it's done about 100 road miles, so is still good as new, bar the odd cosmetic scrape.

Swap for something similar in top normal, ideally short (or medium) cage...

I dont get it? top normal, bottom normal?

Top normal mechs are sprung to return to 'top' gear (smallest sprocket) and you pull them up to the bigger sprockets with the cable.

Bottom normal, or rapid rise, are sprung the other way, to return to the biggest cog, so the cable pulls them to smaller cogs. This reverses the way your trigger shifters work, so you shift up (to a harder gear) with your thumb.

Faster & more efficent, or just Shimano faffing...

I have a bottom normal (rapid rise, backwards) mech, but would like a top normal.

LOL Why didnt you just say Rapid Rise...

I think I have a normal Rise XT mech like that, I may swap.

To be honest, I wasn't absolutely sure that it was the same thing...
Somewhere in the mists of time I (created?) the idea that a rapid rise mech had a different angle of movement to accomodate steeper cassettes (eg. 11-34t as oppose to older 12-28t etc).

Must have half-read something & then imagined the rest - not for the first time

Doesn't sound like a bad idea, but then more modern mechs probably do that anyway...

Anyhoo...
If you do find one let me know!
Thanks very much 8)
