After a set of these for my clockwork, but a bit confused.
I did have a bike's worth which I sold - Doh!

I'm sure they are front and rear specific, with rear ones marked SE for Self Energising.
Also, some have Scott Pedersen branded on them.

Which are which?
Are the SE and Scott Pedersen the same ie rear specific?

Can either type be used safely on the front?

the SE are for rear use only or else you will die apparently ,something about them grapping ( like gripping and grabbing combined ) the wheel and pulling it inwards to the bike which then somersaults and you land head first or something like that

suntour xc , with the se for the rear, same would go for the pederson ones

In fact the opposite, they pull/push away from the wheel if I remember correctly, you would need to have front specific made version.

It depends on the year and model you are talking about. the later XC Pro in the champagne/goldy styling where just normal brakes.
The SE rear where an earlier year.
Catalogues are in the archive for you to have a browse around

Here are the SE rears from SJS, I see prices have yet again gone up.

yeah but i was right about the somersault and face plant which i made up by the way ,and i invented a new word

stole this from elsewhere

What about the old Pederson SE?

"This design can apply greater braking force for less finger force than a conventional cantilever, but it is difficult to modulate it. The original Scott Pedersen SE brakes were available either for front or rear use (opposite direction threadings), but when Sun Tour bought the design, their legal department vetoed the front version, so only the rear model was made by Sun Tour. I advise against the use of Self Energizing brakes, because they make it too easy to lock up the wheel."

Scott Pedersen designed the system in the first place, then Suntour licensed it.

Original Scott Pedersen ones are black or silver CNC numbers. They have SE internals front and rear.
When Suntour licensed them, they bottled out and only had the SE on the back, normal Suntour XC on the front. The SE is the fat barrelled one.

IIRC the rear Suntour SE brake will fit on the front, but you won't get the SE action.

Thorn (SJS Cycles) fitted them on rear mounted bosses, so if you've got Pace forks...

All the best,

I run a Suntour XC set on my Muddyfox pathfinder and found them really good all year last year when I was commuting on it. They were easy to set up, gave good power and were easy to modulate without grabbiness.

Carl.

The Pederson rear does have an either on or off kind of feel. Not much modulation but still work ok with a delicate touch.
