That's a DX thumbie sold as 7spd

They have a hidden secret click, so they will index 8spd

However 8spd cogs are very slightly narrower spacing so the indexing is not perfect.

In fact it gets annoying after a while

There was no 8spd Shimano MTB thumbies

Er, yeah... was referring to the rapidfire type shifter the bike had on before Ed put the DX thumbie on. Not sure whether that's 7 or 8 speed...

That bike looks great. My mate had same one bitd... Nice touring setup too.
Update please. How soggy did you get? What kit worked / didn't work?
