Basically back in the early late 80's/early 90's when things where kicking off. The Web (World Wide Web, now commonly called and incorrectly the Internet or on tinternet) had not been released yet
We relied on the good old local bike store and they stocked what they could get.
Raliegh, Marin, GT, Trek being some of the mass produced brands
Orange, PACE (and Kona for some reason) where what they stocked, hence to not be in the mass produced crowed you bought Orange or PACE or if unfortunate a Kona.
Imports like Rocky Mountains with there high starting price for even the budget model where often out of reach.
So that's why we all had them and really the only reason we think they are cooler in Retro world than a Trek or Marin.
(there where other brands but I cannot list them all)
