Is there is a safe level of smoking?

Did I say there was?

Smoking has primarily self inflicted side effects - it rarely* effects those that choose not to smoke.

Drinking however, often negatively affects those that choose not to drink, and the effects are imposed upon them.

That's just my view, of course.

*yes, yes. Passive smoking.

You are a bairn.
I would respond but I prefer to play the ball, not the man. Reading this back I'm confident it's not me throwing the toys around.

Of course it is, and it is awful.

But lets put this into perspective:

I know (knew) 4 people killed by drunk drivers. I know of no-one that has died from passive smoking. The numbers affected by 'passive drinking' is massively higher than those by passive smoking.

My property (including myself) has been damaged by drunkards on many occasions. This doesn't happen from smoking.

Society has done a good job in discouraging smoking - down from 55% male population to 22% from 1970 - 2007 (stable since 2007), and there has been a corresponding fall in smoking related diseases.

Drinking related diseases have tripled in the last 25 years.

Smoking is bad, we all know that. It just amazes me that people still don't see drinking in the same light.

my daughter who is 8 and i watch the news and eastenders most nights, somthings that are on the news are harder to explaine to her than what goes on in eastenders. shes not stupid and is very inquisitive to pretend that the world is somthing its not is insulting to her intelligence, i have more of a problem with teachers and parents smoking outside the school.

i have no idea how soaps dont get a backlash of complaints for showing people drinking day and night, fighting and murders every 5 minutes and just general arguing familys

Its not until you stop smoking do you realise what a dirty stinking habit cigarettes are, hate smelling it everywhere, sometimes driving along in the car I get the stink and then I see it's not the car infront but the next one up again! Pipes however are ok :D fewer of those "added" chemicals
