Smart TVs and stuff

The Chromecast/ NOWTV dongles use a HDMI port on your TV. These and Generic 'PC on a stick' dongles allow just about any internet content to be displayed on the TV. The generic dongles also allow the addition of an external HDD plus keyboards and so on (Dont know about Chromecast/ AirTV etc).

Our internet has just moved into watchable speeds and have been watching HD films via Netflix on our 'smart' TV and its perfect, no adverts, no buffering. The TV itself can stream to other devices. It can even record if something is connected to the USB port.

The Sony I have has loads of TV apps built in with the opportunity to add more. It also streams Microsoft based stuff from my main PC and the Mrs' laptop. But not apple stuff so no iTunes - yet.

I watched Road House for the first time ever, and in high definition. Mrs LGF was concentrating very carefully on Patrick Swayze for some reason...

As for plasma TV's, very rare now as they are very power hungry compared to new LCD plus they are dammed heavy. My old 42" model was 400w and 40KG compared to 66w and 14kg.

And to add further - smart TV's are a great way to say goodbye to subscription TV and even your TV license (so highlandsflyer doesnt have to watch JC anymore)

As long as you dont watch 'live' broadcasts, you can watch TV without your license

I wanted to get rid of all screen based devices and buy a harpsichord...Sunday mornings, the family hudddles around singing "Jerusalem". Needless to say the wife and kids told me to get stuffed....

So...let me get this right. I can use my old TV as it has an HDMI post...bung in one of those dongle thingies and stream movies from my phone/tablet to the TV.
As long as the internet service is strong, no buffering and good definition?

You'll be watching content directly via the dongle

Think of the dongle as a PC on a stick (but not a jalapeño on a steeek)

No tablet/phone required. Streaming from devices will depend on the capabilities of the dongle

Why the confusion? The dongle is just a tablet or phone without a display. Everything will be familiar once connected. They have similar computing power to a five year old laptop. Operating systems are usually Android based or similar.
