Sloppy shifting....

Cables/housings - either lubrication or replacement would be the obvious place I'd look.

That would be my first move too. strip inners and outers and replace the lot.
Check the shifter return spring ,does it jump back down the gears when disconnected ?
Take off rear mech, remove jockey wheels, remove hair  remembering the grit that gathers in the seal. regrease and reassemble.
Hand work all the mech pivots after giving it a really spray of oil

If the main pivot is indeed worn, if you make the rest of the system spot on it will keep running.

Is the poor shifting when under load? Or also happens when you are fiddling with the bike on a stand or upside down.

Graany ring shiftig, you are using the biggest 3 or 4 sprockets?

Check chain length, b stop scree fully in indicates wrong chain length ( too long?) or weak pivot spring.

Thanks James that would be cool, if it does turn out to be the mech I will be on the hunt for a replacement XT one so I could return your Deore one at MM...

:D

Re:

Just an update on my shifting problem which seems to be the same. I had taken it apart and regreased the rear pivot bolt to see if it helped but as soon as I had to push hard on a climb on in one of the bottom two gears on the cassette it started jumping again. When I got home I checked and noticed that some of the grease had started to seep out around the pivot bolt which is where the play is.
Fairly sure I'll need a new rear mech.

Re:

Still shit! I managed to get round to fitting the donor mech that James kindly sent me and the problem still persists. I have also changed the inner cable and had a look at the shifter which seems to be shifting/moving freely. My only last thought is that it might be that the drop out is bent? See pics attached but I really cant tell... Other that that maybe the chain or cassette although both were working well with the original mech...

Any thoughts anyone?

Doug

Re:

Have the mech hanger checked for straightness, it's not always visible to the naked eye but it will never index properly if the mechs pointing in the wrong direction to start with. If it indexes going up the cassette but not coming down then it's new cables too.

Grab hold of the bottom to the mechs cage ang waggle it side to side, if there's a good wobble & you can see all the pins in the parallelogram are loose then the mechs probably clapped out.
