Sloppy shifting....

My gear shifting had been like stirring a bag of spanners for a while. During a routine strip, clean and grease of the bike, I discovered why – the freehub had shattered into four pieces, bearings rolling everywhere. The cassette had been the only thing holding it all together

Strip, clean, replace/renew any suspect parts (if necessary), lubricate and rebuild. A process of elimination will sort things out. It's like turning it on and off again :)

Ha thanks!

Cheers! If cables are fairly unused they'll only need a clean and lube may be. If it's not them then it's somewhere in the mechanicals of the drivetrain. If the chain/correct chain length, cogs, rings, jockey wheels are in good condition, and cassette/BB/cranks are nicely tightened up, then the culprit may be the Shimano M735 XT rear mech.

I had early 90's DX kit on at one point and the rear mech seemed sloppy and kept letting me down with the chain slipping whenever I needed to pedal hard. One day, the damn thing exploded all over the road in traffic :x  :(

It's now in the 'museum of broken parts' and since then I've been running XT M772 rear mechs without any fails – totally sweet :D

Do t discount the shifter barrel adjuster being goosed, I noticed my xt740 Sti had gone after spending about 40 mins on a ride trying to index my gears ... Those gen shifters had several parts made of cheese...

Yes, I've had a similar experience. Crap shifting turned out to be a loose cassette.

As ever my process of elimination starts with the cheapest things to check/replace.

Re:

Well the cassette is fine just checked today...

I went out on it again tonight and it shifted well 90% when in the middle front ring. In the granny the shifting was really poor, every shift needing an extra half click on the shifter to tease it into the next gear. Or clicking twice and then back one to shift just one gear. The outer ring shifted ok (for the short time I was in it!). Another point is that the b screw is at almost full tension, pretty much screwed in to get the correct jockey wheel clearance...

Re:

Hey Doug
I had the same problem on my Orange last year. I had bought a very tidy looking m739 mech but got the same thing.
Bought another cheap one the was missing its rear plate and jockeys, swapped the bits over and Bingo! everything worked as it should :) and still going strong.

This is your bikes way of telling you to MTFU and stay in the middle ring

Alright "Alpine Mark" some of us enjoy a bit of granny ring now and again!
