Have the mech hanger checked for straightness, it's not always visible to the naked eye but it will never index properly if the mechs pointing in the wrong direction to start with. If it indexes going up the cassette but not coming down then it's new cables too.

Grab hold of the bottom to the mechs cage ang waggle it side to side, if there's a good wobble & you can see all the pins in the parallelogram are loose then the mechs probably clapped out.

Hi its had a new cable and this is the 2nd mech that is not shifting properly. The 1st did wobble a bit but this new one not. I lubed all in the cable outers too and the cable was running silky smooth through it. I also gave the inside of the shifter a healthy blast of GT85. It shifts up ok but on the top 3 largest sprockets it takes 2 clicks to shift down...

Haven't changed the bottom bracket recently have you? Crank bolts are tight? Front mech lined up correctly?

Thanks for that thought...cranks were fitted at time of refurb...2013 I think! I will check the bolts though, but have not felt any play..
