Shimano XTR V brakes circa 1998 vs Avid BB5 mechanical disc

Why would you have a mechanical disc when fitting a hydraulic is not much more work?
I have an Avid Elixir on the front and XTR M952 on the rear with an Avid lever. Both brakes have a very similar feel in use.

On the fork maybe, but I don't want mismatched levers and (most) retro frames have cable guides, not hose guides. Can't stand cable ties around the frame.

You can get adaptors which look a bit better than cable-ties or you can even drill out the cable guides.
I take your point though :)
