Servicing a Pace RC36

Ok here's how they looks with the carbon cover removed.

That long screw fell inside the stanchion like if there was nothing to push it. This makes me think that they are oil based and that oil is completely missing. Am i right?

Re:

They are different to all the pairs I own / owned.
So not really sure, but yes presumably that's the damping side?
justbackdated will know.

Re:

They look like the pair I had in 1997. I may even still have the service manual somewhere...

As I recall they had coil springs in both legs and a damping cartridge at the top of one; I think it was the left non drive side leg.

In terms of maintenance, you just used plenty of RC-7 fork grease, either applied while disassembled or squirted into the grease ports using a grease gun.
The damping cartridge had an external adjuster on the fork crown and the oil in the cartridge could be changed to adjust damping even further.

There was no oil in the legs other than that which was contained inside the cartridge.

Thank you a lot drystonepaul.

Today i've been to a local bike store and they told me the springs are so old that they got shorter. So they suggested me to place a piece of rubber under the springs to reduce their movements as they don't sell those springs anymore.

I'll try to do so and in the meanwhile i'll try to find some good springs.

Ok, i replaced the oil in the right stanchion, cleaned ,greased and tightened everything back.
I noticed there is an elastomer inside each spring. But they are inside, without anything keeping them in place, free to move along the screw. How do they work? Is this the way they are meant to be working?
