However as I'd bought the wheels from another Retrobike member (and, in theory it would have been easy for another member to find this out), I figured that it was much better to be honest and transparent, rather than hiding the facts.

In future, if I encounter this same situation again I think I'll throw the "honesty is the best policy" out of the window and just hope that I don't get caught out.

But if you're being transparent and honest then you should also mention that you only edited your original ad to include that information after someone pointed it out - it wasn't in the ad from the start. So really you did throw 'honesty is the best policy' out the window and you did get caught out.

Personally I could care what people sell things for; buy and sell to feed a hobby is fair sport and if you get a bargain and make on it then what's the problem. The onus is on the individual to pay what they think is fair not on the seller to charge what others thing is fair.

Please check your facts before you make such statements Pete. I stated from the beginning that I bought them from another member, and also stated EXACTLY how much I paid for them.

I changed the wording of the advert slightly, but the information concerning how much I paid for them was there from the start, and it was this that Russell picked up and commented on.

I'm more than happy for you to check that out if you're able to, but please don't state things which are untrue.

Thanks
Mark

If I didn't state it from the beginning, then it was added in very shortly after it was posted, and certainly a long time before the first reply was posted (so Pete, I didn't get "caught out"). Again, I'm happy for someone to check this out if it's that important.

Cheers

I don't see anything wrong with what you've done, its not like you've asked loads more.

The postage thing happens a lot on here though, it seems to me that a big reason for prices creeping up is that the same things get sold over and over again on here. So with each person adding their little bit of postage and before long its doubled in price

Yep, I've seen that before.

However my wheels were still plenty cheap enough, even with my postage costs covered ;)

The wheels have been sold now anyway, and I'm sure that the new owner will be chuffed to bits with them :)

Barney I never have a problem with making a profit on stuff. If you happen to make a couple of quid along the way good on you. I think the biggest pi55 take is when peeps sell stuff they have been karma'd. Well thats my 2ps worth.

Yeah, I did think of changing it to Del Boy just for the purposes of this thread ;)

Barney, it's not important, you bought stuff and was selling it at a price that simply covered your costs - absolutely nothing wrong there at all. Postage is part of the value and is always taken into consideration when I buy stuff, on ebay if the stuff is local to me I will happily bid more than I would if it had a £10 courier fee. common sense really.

On here most items are price posted - do you then look at the stamp value and deduct that or do you consider the time and cost of wrappings?

You pay what you want for an item - if you feel it is too expensive don't buy it and don't comment openly unless the seller as asked for pricing advice.

If the item is vastly overpriced for what it is, a polite pm to advise the seller of what they have been going for recently might help his sale but you should only do this if you know for sure.

- Keep commentary on pricing to a minimum - the value of retro parts is very subjective.

Just put them on e-bay.

I did think you were being to honest over price. Nice to see people being honest. But look what happens.

nice wheels.
