Hi folks, sold my Ozone a couple of weeks ago. Bike has only just been ridden and new owner had a problem with the LH Cooks crank - came off. Tapers found to be knackered. No reason to disbelieve buyer, very genuine. I had never ridden the bike.

My issue is I believed tapers were in good nick, Cooks had been through more than one RBer with no issues. Clearly I was wrong or Something went wrong when ridden.

Don't want to shaft buyer (or be shafted), so what do you guys think is a fair way of sorting? I was thinking a contribution to another set of Cooks (or a LH single if there is one!), but welcome your views. Only thing I will not do is buy the whole thing back as spent money.

This will not be a fight, want to keep it all smiley.

if you ride cooks cranks the tapers shit themselves & die. highly possible the crank died from actual use.

... okay so I havent helped

(F cranks appear to be the exception)

in the case of a minor element of a complete system failing *after* use, a contribution towards the cost of that element is fair imo.

BarneyRubble has it now and only mentioning it (since it can be found very easy) so people don't sling mud :) Well unless it's good sloppy Mendip mud :D

I don't know but they are cooks

Don't know the history of the cranks.

Just to make sure I've understood this correctly.......you're saying they're rubbish, I just want to know as I was considering them for a project

Yep, no mud required, just opinions about how to move forward.

Did not realise Cooks were notorious, only got them because they were pretty.

I didn't think they were notorious either, one of the few retro cranks you still see going around.

Very difficult one...I have no frame of reference with Cooks cranks...but we all know you to be a good guy...and Barneyrubble.
So...all was sold and bought in good faith, but we are talking about retro (old) parts here. Stuff does degrade/weaken with age.
As a buyer I would be pretty miffed...but so too as a seller.
Chalk it down to the manner of stuff we trade and shake hands 50/50 would seem the right course of action...but what do I know?

Hi Chaps,

As you know I bought the Ozone from Luke and am very happy with it. I have no reason to doubt him when he says he thought the cranks were fine and that he hasn't ridden the bike because it is immaculate. It is still immaculate because my Mrs (who is new to cycling and was bought the bike as a wedding present) had only been on the bike 15 mins when the LH crank dropped off taking the last few threads of the Ti crank bolt with it. There was no abuse as she was on the road and having hardly ridden a bike before, wasn't hucking some big drops! :)

I think anyone who has dealt with either Luke or I will know we are both straight up and honest, so I think this one has to go down to bad luck! :(

Luke has agreed to contribute towards another set, or a replacement LH arm if one exists, so my question is.....Has anyone on RB got a spare LH crank? It's a long shot I know, but I can't really afford a complete set as I stretched the budget to buy the Ozone.
