Interesting if a little confusing. I've seen apex chainsets - some with a forged crank and silky anodising; and some with a pressed crank spider and less classy anodisingMy understanding is that there are three grades of SR components, Royale at the top followed by Apex with Silstar at the bottom. I have three bikes fully equipped with SR and would say they are some of the nicest and best value for money vintage parts out there with quite a lot of nos parts still available for a good price.
I think the Royale and Apex cranks are forged and the Silstar are cast, the Apex are also available with three different BCD so something to suit every purpose.
I think it's for something to do with of the shelf parts fitted to new bikes and stuff in the retail chain in shops. I guess the reason most of the big box seller stuff is less well finished is cost. All the SR parts I owned were silky smooth anodised in a really nice pearl silver. Better than Campagnolo!Interesting if a little confusing.
