My understanding is that there are three grades of SR components, Royale at the top followed by Apex with Silstar at the bottom. I have three bikes fully equipped with SR and would say they are some of the nicest and best value for money vintage parts out there with quite a lot of nos parts still available for a good price.
I think the Royale and Apex cranks are forged and the Silstar are cast, the Apex are also available with three different BCD so something to suit every purpose.

Interesting if a little confusing. I've seen apex chainsets - some with a forged crank and silky anodising; and some with a pressed crank spider and less classy anodising

I think it's for something to do with of the shelf parts fitted to new bikes and stuff in the retail chain in shops. I guess the reason most of the big box seller stuff is less well finished is cost. All the SR parts I owned were silky smooth anodised in a really nice pearl silver. Better than Campagnolo!

There's a frame for sale local to me, but it's off road version, if it was for 700c I'd snap it up! Lovely intricate details.

You are right they seem to come with both levels of quality, I had a crankset with an integral large chainring and not particularly good finish.
