See if he can specialise and even more so a skill that maybe in demand when he eventually leaves or a skill that might be higher in demand in the more specialist units that recruit particulary from the Marines whilst he's in service/quote]good idea to specialise in area relevant to civilian life. I will talk to him about it.

Love all the supportive comments

Having been in the military for 10 years (forced to quit after hitting the maximum amount of years in contract) I can say those were definitely the best years of my life so far. Working as a team with nationals and foreign forces, the training, the comradeship, friendship, is a must. Getting back to the "civilian workforce" is depressing, this in terms of the huge lack of commitment, struggle and attitude you face daily. I can assure if everyone did it for at least one year, there weren't as many people around complaining about the difficulties of life or getting a job. Im not saying it would end crisis or so, but much of the whining on youth these days comes for lack of those values. The things you learn in the military training seem simple and basic to the public eye, but will give you the tools for virtually any situation you will encounter in your life.

All the best for him! : )

Just wait until he comes home on leave with a perchance for running about naked with roll mats over his arms and wearing dresses for a night out all perfectly normal so I'm told. Best of luck to him.

Could be there's something to that - going back a few decades, many were offspring from a generation, that one way, or another (active service or conscription), served in the forces - and perhaps that had a significant influence on parenting.

A few years back there was a "reality" TV programme about young ne-er-do-wells taking part in a boot camp / basic training period - I guess to test that proposition about service life having a notable influence on straightening out the particpants. I'm unclear whether it was because of the camera presence, or simply the times are a PC-ing, but you got the impression that the beastings were just too toned down or held in check. I got the feeling that if the toe-rags taking part had been subject to the environment that the soldiers involved had been through when they joined up, then the aggression and irreverence they were trying to address wouldn't be quite as sustained as it was.

The beatings were toned down for TV and the fact they weren't in the army. Some of the stuff I seen happen in junior leaders would be classed as child abuse these days bit all good fun. Being given gun drills by the 100's then made to run screwing up your knees. Put in stress positions change parades etc then being told your were going to be made to sweat ....in a swimming pool. All character building stuff and great fun when you lol back on it. I'm afraid if they had been allowed to take the gloves off proper for bad lads army most would have left within a few days.

Are you talking about a tv show or have you seen it? where ? If they been allowed, wait, do you suppose or you actually saw it ?
Military training, specially basic training and fundamentals are generally the same all around the world, then it gets more specific depending on whats the purpose. I was talking in the military institution as a whole and not specifying on airborne, marines or artillery.

I did 6 years was a Royal Navy Commando as i was an artificer apprentice who did the all arms course was good but left when the force scraped my branch and left me in Iraq for ny on 2 years hope he enjoys it but dosn't get bitter of it :D

I experienced it first hand. Got a few smacks off the troop DS. The troop cpl would take you into a clothes drying room which was tiny and very hot/humid and have you doing dips/chin ups etc logs above the head for an good or two at a time. Thankfully kept my nose clean so never got the treatment guys would come out ready to collapse bearing in mind most of us were 15/16yrs old at the time. I was also regimental police at an adult training depot for a bit and gave the naughty boys a bit of a sweaty drill session in the exercise yard within the guardroom from time to time.
I take it your not ex UK forces? This was common place until the early/mid 90's. The tv program we are talking about is bad lads army who were given 50's style training you'll find it on YouTube.

we had this kind of abuse in the 80s with people getting killed and abused.
no not uk forces but worked with but yours navy army and air force : )

From my knowledge in terms of western Europe, we all got the mid 80's and 90s problems, from the end of conscripts, rebuilding of the institution and new mission and cuts, soon followed by the generation internet...
