My son starts basic training in the marines on April the 16th

I had hoped he would think of some safer job to do but he has worked hard over the last year to be fit enough and is very excited about going.

I hope it all works out for him though.

Firstly, well done to your son for having the initiative and determination to get his fitness up to scratch - itself no mean feat.

Secondly, I may be wrong here but I believe that 3 Cdo Bde are now no longer on the Op Herrick treadmill. If so then your son is unlikely to deploy to Afghanistan and if he does then it will be in a largely training and advisory role (most ops are now carried out by the ANA with brit forces held in reserve).
I've been out of the loop for a bit so that might be b*****ks though.

Lastly, it's a brilliant way of life for a young lad and if he's anything like the booties I worked with then he'll love it. 8)

I agree with Nodding Dog (and what he says in his post above is also true afaik), if he passes the training then it'll probably be the best thing he's ever done, he'll make some great mates and probably be doing a job he enjoys, not many peoplecan say that.
It's in a parents nature to worry, it won't get any easier but over time you do get more used to it.
Just be proud of him and support him however you can.

Is he training in Poole? If so, can you ask him to behave in my local

He is training at Lympstone.

I'm sure daughters will be fine he'll be far too tired to chase women :)

thaks for your replies, has anyone else had dealings with the armed forces

Hope it goes well for him, just up the road from me in Exmouth, bet he will be out in pubs there soon enough.

I've got a few friends in the RM and they bloody love it! Your lad will have the time of his life, there's always the worry involved in services life, but on the upside there's a whole world of adventure out there to be enjoyed. Good luck to him!

See if he can specialise and even more so a skill that maybe in demand when he eventually leaves or a skill that might be higher in demand in the more specialist units that recruit particulary from the Marines whilst he's in service

For many who go to the Marines and stay the course very few regret it. I think he has made a very wise choice. I hope he gets through as it's life changing in so many positive ways
