Ringle Bubba Freewheel Hub question.

Hello Fellow Retrobikers !

I am doing a build using a full XTR M900 drivetrain. The wheels I am using have an early Ringle Bubba Freewheel Hub.

Being a newbie at this + not using my whole brain capacity, I though I would be using the M900 cassette. Obviously this is going to be a problem. So my questions are:

-Is there any kind of mechanism or modification I could do, that would allow me to use the XTR M900 cassette? OR
-Is there any kind of thread-on freewheel that I can use that is 8-speed and will be compatible with my M900 rear mech?

Would be super thankful for help on this!

This is the model of hub:

Sachs made a 12-32 8 speed freewheel. Here is a link to one on ebay. That was the go to freewheel of the time but after 8 speed came out freewheels died off. If it was my build I would shop for a super bubba hub set spend the $300 for an nos m900 cassette and save the freewheel hubs for an older 7 speed build.

Thank you so much!

But what would be the downside to using a Sachs 8 speed freewheel on my build(why would you go for another hub?)?

Feeling like the dumbest Retrobuilder in the world, I already have the wheels built up with the Freewheel hub, and I already have the complete XTR M900 for the build.
It should also be added that this will be a wall hanger. So although I want it to be 100% functional, it will never be ridden hard or put to the test.

First thing you need to ensure is that the hub you have is for an eight speed screw on cassette and not seven.

I have exactly the same hub in blue that I'm building up at the moment .
I am using the below SunRace cassette:

Measure the distance between the two spoke flanges and let me know, I can then tell you if it's 7 or 8 speed.
If it's 7 speed I have 2 of the above SunRace cassettes new in box with different ratios I bought accidentally instead of an 8 speed, can sell you one at a good price.

No need to spend tons more money.

Goof to hear that I am not the only one with these drew ons….

It is difficult to get a good measurement with the spooks in the way, but I think I am getting 64 mm. If that is correct, that would indicate the 7-speed version according to your link, yes?

Will it be possible to run a 7-speed cassette together with the 8-speed XTR M900 rear mech?

Yes is the answer. On the bike I am planning on using my Ringle wheels it's currently running an XT hubbed rear wheel with a 7 speed cassette, 8 speed capable XTR M900 rear mech and STI shifters.

If you fancy one or both of the 7 speed rear cassettes I have they are on my sale thread:

Thank you. But just to add to the confusion, the width of the hub is 135mm, it is a tight fit on my Adroit frame. Given that, it should not be possible that the distance between the spoke flange is 64mm if I read the chart correctly. I must have made an error in my measurements.

Okay, try another measurement. Bearing edge on drive side to end of anodised part of axel.

Just to be sure, you mean the w_left + w_right, yes?

Re:

But I read the chart wrong. The MT7 version in Merlinos thread is 135mm and 64mm flange to flange. So it seem like that is my hub. That is not so great as I thought I would build a 8-speed XTR M900

But as you said, it is possible to combine with the M900 rear mech, and you have a fitting cassette for sale. Just let me double check the measurement and get back to you.
