Reynolds 531SL Speedstream

Browsing Hilary Stone's site, I saw this Simoncini:
"SIMONCINI AERO ROAD FRAME
Seat Tube (ctc): 59cm (23.5in)
Top Tube (ctc): 58cm (23in)
Rear dropout width: 126mm
Wheel size: 700C/sprints with brake drop of 45mm
Seatpost size: 26.8mm
Frame tubing: Oria ML25
This Italian built Simoncini aero road frame is built from Oria ML25 tubing which has been reshaped into aero profiles on the seat and down tubes. I think it dates from the later 1980s. The paint is generally very good with just a few small areas that could do with being touched up. £145"

The only differences with mine, that I can see, are that it takes a 26.8mm seatpost (mine is 27.2mm) and it has lugged forks. It's even the same size!

Does anyone know if Simoncini were in the habit of building frames for others?

If nothing else it, and the blurb for the Jan Janssen listed below it, confirms that during the late Eighties/early Nineties, reshaping tubes into an aero profile wasn't so uncommon.

I'm tempted to buy it, just to be able to compare the two...

Hi, until about 6/7 years ago when i sold it on ebay  (prior to me getting back into old bikes), i owned a Raleigh SBDU time-trial frameset built from 531 pro which had aero section main tubes that reverted back to round at the lugs. It may be owned by someone here now?. When i owned it, it was a very fetching light metallic pink with chrome forks. It does go to prove that Raleigh, at least, made specialist frames from high end aero tubing.

Cheers Matt

Hiya,

this is not Speedstream, as mentioned by others Speedstream was designed for lugless construction and is oval and symmetrical, i.e not a different shape over it's length.

Speedstream is an interesting tubeset but is relatively heavy (i.e heavier than regular 531) - Speedstream is NOT SL.

Raleigh did make low end bikes with oval tubing but this was nothing special but Hi -Ten.

I recently sold (not on here) a very nice Mercian built in this tubeset (Speedstream of course).

Hope this helps.

Roadking.
Hello Roadking, I know it was a while ago but can you tell me anymore about the Mercian Speed Stream you sold? as I've just aquired one. Thanks
