I Just walked past an uber-trendy London twenty something that looked like something out of a Bananarama video or at least an extra from a Kagagoogoo one, riding a flouro yellow forked Alpinestars (badly).

She clearly considered this period piece ironic or just plain '80's' enough to use it as a party/ college/ work arrival device.

I am getting old and I already got grumpy and this made me feel very out of touch. So out of touch in fact that I realised I was coming round full circle to being unaware fashionable. Well maybe.

most of my riding mates take the pi$$ outta retro stuff, which I tolerate as they donate their old stuff to me :)

I’d say there’s a contradiction between the concepts trendy and retro, in that they have opposite attitudes to the passing of time. But cool is a better concept and I think it is true to say that a retro bike can be cool. But only if it is original, preferably a little battered and well-loved, and the owner can casually say ‘Oh that, oh I’ve had that for donkeys years, is an Explosif quite good then?’ I’m afraid lovingly adorning your bike with purple bits is never going to be cool, as far as trendy femmes are concerned.

Anyway retrocredits to Gus for ogling the bike and not the attractive lady riding it. Perhaps it’s quite a good chat up line actually, to ask a female about her bike and completely ignore her evident beauty?

I must try that one 'Nice bike, fancy a ride ?'

I was at Bewl Water once with GF and while we were having a drink stop a girl passed by on a sweet little Lava Dome and I quite innocently said 'hey, nice bike, I've got one of those myself' and the girl said thanks. My GF was quite offended that I would try to chat somebody else up while she was with me, but I said no it was a nice bike, I didn't even notice the rider. It was true actually, but the GF didn't believe me.

Women are so unreasonable, aren't they?

I bumped into old work mates last week who asked if it was me they saw on a bike the week before. They used to take the piss out of my 60s cars, 70s hair and vintage trainers all the time.

'was it a classic bike?' one of them grinned
' yes actually it was a late 80s..........'
They all started piss taking and laughing. Trapped in the past I am apparently.

Some people have no taste

it must be something about alpinestars though coz there's a guy (read tw*t) that lives somewhere around near my shop that is the local shifty drugdealer and he has a quite nice but battered cro mega dx, white/pink.
