Retro counseling needed!

Know how you feel, just finished my latest project and got another one already in bits scattered round the house (don't think the M2 Stumpy frame is too popular in its back of the wardrobe home)

Went out for a while this afternoon on my modern bike (M5 S-Works HT) and got to say it kicks the arse out of the oldies for pretty much everything.

Also don't discount a decent modern alu frame, not as stiff as some would have you believe. Sell them both, if you are already considering it that must mean you are ok with them going.

The only trouble with most modern bikes is the colour (everything is black, or black, or maybe just a little black) and the weight  My Avalanche was nearly 30lbs

I would agree but my five is slime green and weighs around 28lbs... not bad for a 5.5" full susser

Modern stuffs ok,but it just isn't built to last, shocks blow periodically, pivots are always wearing out etc.The best modern bike is a singlespeed!

mmm tough call, if you are going to buy a new modern MTB, I would sell the Orange Five Pro for a new bike and maybe sell one retro bike to balance out a mixture of retro and modern MTB in your collection.

I really like the 5 in that colour :D
team mojo 5s are 25lbers in full xc trim.. but yeh when you start building em up for abuse 28lb is about right.

Yup, almost the same here, nearly 3 years & no servicing on any of the bearings or parts at all on my (recently nicked) Orange 5, Single Pivot is the way to go

The thought of selling my Five sends shivers down my spine... that would be like cutting off my arm...

I have to agree with the singlepivot low maintenance. My Five is still working smoothly after a year of abuse and my previous Sub5 had no issues in the three years that I owned it! Who needs more then one pivot heh?

Andy .. I hope your insurance pays out! My Sub5 got nicked.. luckily the insurance company were more then generous with the replacement!!

i sometimes have similar issues to this, but i'm lucky enough that most of my retro stuff hasn't cost me too much so i don't feel i need to justify selling 1 bike to get another, i just save more or wait for new projects to come along, my O for example, the frame was cheap as nuts and it was built out of spares except for the wheels which came from my oldest clockwork that weren't correct for that bike but then lucky enough the following week the right wheels components showed their face for the clockwork. :D

also i agree with scant, i have riders and garage queens, and i hate that really, they should be ridden otherwise it's a waste. but i view the bikes i have that are garage queens more as part of a collection, museum pieces i suppose. they are functional and working but only used occaisionally on dry day special occasions like showing it off at events like when i brought my clockwork to ssmm to show it.

the modern bikes get ridden most, the 07 clockwork and st4 then the cyclocross bike, the O gets used for work, the c16r for nice days the 93 clockwork is the full on queen and the newly added kona is the rider retro coz it's not immaculate! :D and i haven't used the d2 much coz i'm bored of road at the mo but i do happily ride it usually.

in your situation assuming it is a 1 in 1 out style i would keep the 96 p7 out of your retro machines because it is the older and therefore more retro model and even though you have a clockwork i feel the p7 you have is more iconic than your particular clockwork. i really agree you should not sell the 5, that is a very good bike, possibly the most perfect (imo :D ) allround full susser available today, simple and reliable.

i do conceed that the modern bikes ride nicer hence riding mine more myself, but i'd hate to part with any of my bikes, i'm at the point where all my bikes that are modern are relatively limited so i wouldn't want to sell them (frames specifically) either! :D

it is a massive dilemma if you have to decide, good luck deciding, i don't envy you!

:)
