Retro counseling needed!

Yep me too though i went the other way recently for a bit.

Chasing fast riders on cool old bikes across the peaks on a fully rigid Raleigh with all 21 gears brought it all back to me. 8)

I'm very keen on selling my Identiti as it doesnt seem to work for me, heavy stodgy etc, Got my heart set on a Commencal Absolut 4x after a ride at Merlin or a Charge blender Ti (or other) next !!! 8)

Erm,all my full suss bikes of recent memory have been single pivots,Santa cruz heckler and superlight,Cannondale Rush etc. They do get ridden mostly in the peak district though, guess that peak grit really is destructive,Mavic wheel bearings don't seem to last 5mins either!

The only trouble with most modern bikes is the colour (everything is black, or black, or maybe just a little black) and the weight  My Avalanche was nearly 30lbs

I don't have any of those problems with my ASR-SL

The solution to it all is Sinetts Alpinestars! Proper suspension + disc brakes and its retro!

:D

Okay so "Retro" is a tricky word: it doesn't mean old, nor is it specific to a any particular period of time.

But summing up this thread so far, what I'm getting is, "Yeah, new suspension bikes are un-beatable, and if I have to admit a non-suspension bike is good for old time's sake, then what's the best contemporary one to buy?"

Surely that's like a vegetarian saying, "Yeah, Surf and turf is out of this world but when I have steak should I go for organic lamb or beef?"

My modern bike isn't Black or anywhere approaching 30lbs,in fact just under 24lbs if the bathroom scales are to be believed

Does have a fair bit of M952 kit though and Bombers, so not too new I suppose :)

As for what you want, it's all down to travel and discs, isn't it? A Cotic Soul has geometry for 100-130mm travel and is disc-only. If that's what you want, you can't get it from retro. A 98-99 Explosif is made of the same tubeset as the Soul and must in many ways feel much the same, but it has geometry for 70-80mm travel and is V-only. And it's hugely cheaper. But if that's not enough, then may as well accept it.

But on the other hand, we all know that the best way to raise money from a bike is to part it out, and once you've taken the bits off your P7, the frame won't take up any space at all. And if you did sell it as a complete bike, you'd probably be a bit sick about how little it raised compared to how much of a pal it's been to you. So why not keep the frame, for whenever?

After spending most of the day cleaning up my inbred I have to admit that I do have two very nice modern bikes... I'm still undecided overall with what to do but thanks to everyone for your advice. It has been useful! :D

Exactly what I did with the Zaskar... It lasted less than 2 weeks as a 'frame only' and I've now got a load of parts winging their way to me to build it up again

I guess some bikes just beg to be ridden.. the sluts.
