Rescued from the bicycle junkyard

Hey all, how are you? I rescued this from the scrapheap at the local community bicycle workshop, I paid nothing for it, I got it on the condition that I donate some of my unwanted spare wheels, which is no problem for me. The hub date is June 1963. Got her home, pumped up the tyres and oiled the chain and hub, apart from some dodgy shifting, she runs like a dream, once that is sorted out, I think I shall use her as a daily

Yeah Man probs will need a new saddle/re upholstery, but apart from that she is ready to go, very comfortable bike. I was at some traffic lights, and as they went green someone shot past me on a new racer, wearing no helmet, I pedalled with all my might and caught up with him, we got stopped at the next red light, and when it went green, I left him behind never diss a heavy old classic

Thats more your legs as these things are heavy as hell I did similar with 2 lycra clad mtbers. They had nice bikes, expensive :? Top lids , the works and i followed them and picking my chance pulled up alongside. wearing my old offshore sailing jacket and a pair of dunlop wellies. Gave a cheery. 'Nice day for it guys' then overtook and disappeared off into the distance. I was riding a muddy fox
TBH i near killed myself and took the first left where i near collapsed off the bike I think i left them to feel slightly embarrassed for the rest of the day :twisted: Took me an hour though to stop hyperventilating



Where in Scotland are you based? I know of a number of recyclers in Glasgow where you'd get a period replacement saddle.

Yeah I think my addiction to old three speeds since I was 10 years old has helped with that When the gears still worked I loved doing that to other cyclists on my 1973 RSW.

I am in Aberdeen right now as I go to university there. But my home is near Stirling but Glasgow is my second home. I shall have a look into those links

For now I shall try and re wire the dynohub lamps and I use a small set of LED lamps at night time. It has always been a dream of mine to replace the bulbs in these old lamps with LED's, but I would need to sit down and do some calculations as to how I would build the circuit, what resistors to use etc, (and I hate electrical engineering :/ )

Agreed she wasn't properly thrown out, this workshop is student run, people donate old bikes, and they also get the unclaimed bikes from the police station, they fix them up and hire them out to students for a £40 deposit. Some bikes that are too much work get stripped and as a result they have an amazing spares collection, one of the main guys there told me no one else would probably want this bike and so she wouldn't be going anywhere soon, but now she's in safe hands

There was a couple of these in my family many years ago.

And one of these in blue (a kind of grey / blue colour) was my big bruv's first proper bike (this would probably be late 70s). Had wooden blocks nailed to the pedals 'cos it was a bit big for him.

I remember the front dynamo hub, that little wheel by the seat-tube / top-tube junction for the gear cable.

Now that's funny ! I have similar experiences when I'm out , albeit not in wellies
