Removing a stuck seat post

Re:

never had one that was stuck down to far, usually there enough post sticking out when i've done it. I guess one time i had to drill a hole through the post and put a screwdriver through it and hammer on the screwdriver to get it out. And also another time when the post top broke off there wasn't anything to hammer on. see pic

Re:

There wouldn't be enough metal on the post to drill through it, and certainly not for anything strong enough to take the forces to get the post out.

The penetrating oil has started to work a bit I hope. Hot water didn't work, and a bit of heat (from a distance and no where near hot enough to do any damage to the frame) had little effect, apart from loosening the seat top. It post had started to make growning noises, so will try leaving it for a while longer with the penetrating oil, and then try again in a few weeks time.

a pic might help us here

if I understand correctly you have a steel tube just sticking out above the alloy frame? If the clamp is still on the top of the post air hammer is the way to go - post sounds fubar anyhow

if there is a few mm of plain steel tube sticking out of alloy frame and it was my bike I would be using mole grips on the edge of the steel tube and air hammer

@Sailingjab1976: is there any chance this is actually an alloy post? im running out of ideas here

from his other thread :)

lots to work with there

I would get seat off and clamp post in a vice with frame upside down - your gonna need a new post anyhow

Use the frame for leverage give it some wiggles and see what happens . . .

Spray some release fluid (I like Plus Gas) from BB or through bottle cage bolt holes if there are any. Leave it a day or two and wiggle again

Repeat as required

If the post head breaks off doing this you can go down the slide hammer route by threading the inside of the post tube. Even if it doesnt you could drill and tap a thread in the top of the post casting and try to slide hammer it out

good luck!

Re:

If that's the the post that is stuck there is plenty of room to air hammer it out without drilling a hole through it....
