Record Sprint and 105 Groupset

Mine was a lucky find back in 2008, I don't think it had been used very much prior to me buying on eBay for about £40.

Your's probably needs bead/shot blasting to establish if the frame is useable, otherwise you might spend money painting it, and fitting the new components for it to fail the first time you use it.

Reynolds steel is pretty tough, but if the rust has got to places you can't see then it might all be over quickly...

Yeah... could be an idea to fit a front wheel of some sort and ride it a bit somewhere safe just to check it's still weight-bearing, before I repaint, actually,... I have a shotblaster attachment so might give that a go. And could be an idea to Waxoyl inside the tubes too, I suppose. It's not like that's gonna hinder the operation of hidden cabling, is it...

Not a bad idea

I see that it has a Mavic rear wheel, which must mean you changed them at some point, as the Quasar had black anodised weinmann rims..

If you're then looking for a new home for any of the existing components let me know, as I'm always on the look out for 80's Raleigh bits!

That's right - the wheels were black initially, but I seem to remember there was an insurmountable hub or cassette or freewheel problem of some sort which required the purchase of a new one. I may even have built that one up myself - I know I built one wheel after making my own jig from the wood from the frame of an old wardrobe. Happy days...

As for bits, I'd better not bin/rehome them till I get everything - whether that's 105 or cheaper more suitable alternatives, working - which may well be some time! But I was never impressed by those Weinemann brakes, which always seemed to seize on one side, and I wouldn't be surprised if that chainset is very worn indeed... It was very much a working bike, out in all weathers and propped up anywhere I could find while doing my rounds, so everything's pretty battered!

Re:

The 105 groupset offer @ £299 I thought was good too. I was tempted, but don't really need it.

I too don't see the sense in upgrading your old bike. The frame will let the rest down. By all means, restore your old bike, but don't spend £500 on it.

The biggest problem you may have is fitting the brakes - the nut/allen key difference is an easy fix, it's whether the frame has close enough clearances to accommodate the calipers.

if it were me (and its not I know), I'd be looking for a decent used 531/653 racing bike/frame and put the new stuff on that. And then restore your Raleigh on an appropriate budget.

I was halfway towards accepting your idea - thinking I could strip the comps off a 531/653, add them to the RRS, and add the 105 to 531/653 instead - but then realised that would involve having ANOTHER bike lying around... The RRS currently makes it four and I just haven't the room for more at the moment. I've already got four cars on the driveway - only one of them's currently drivable - so I'm beginning to feel a bit like Mr Trebus...

I take your point though - but I'm not gonna make any decision till I've had a proper look at the bare metal frame and see where to go from there.

Ew, it's the ugly version. Alright, yeah, a respray and outfitting with an entire new 105 group makes sense.

Unless there's rust inside the tubes... which there very well could be.

You can get a Raleigh Reynolds 501 bare frame on ebay for £50 or so. I strongly recommend doing that, fixing the rust and painting will cost more.
