Thought about something a bit different? How about a bianchi super ibex?

Just so happens I have one in a small frame for sale ;-)

Shameless, I know!

Don't worry mate, I've been looking at that all morning on and off, just a bit worried about sizing and the fact they didn't get exactly glowing reviews...perhaps I shouldn't be so fussy....

Re:

Trek 9500 is the bike to have.

If you must do that silly modernist retro thing and find something that quite possibly works, then errr. Them marine as mentioned are common as muck and fit an air shock and they apparently work.
But then you may as well sod it and get a lighter better modern xc bike.

The kona and rocky mountain used a design that lasted a long time and a similar version is still used, just with extra swings in it.

Pop into the what's it worth section and look at the different bikes there to see what floats your boat.

The kona looked a bit daft in 1997 unfortunatly

It was uglier than even the 1997 GT LTS which was a poor daft looking contraption.

I use 1997 as the later you go the better they tend to be.

It falls slightly out of the age range for 'retro' on this forum, but a Giant NRS would be my choice. Indeed, I've got a full XTR XtC950 from 2001. NRS was the first system to combine proper damping, springing, geometry, frame and swinger stiffness and a high resistance to pedal bob. I've not ridden a full squidger from earlier than that which worked well. MBR magazine tested a Proflex a while back and were horrified at how bad it was - glad I'm not the only one, because a lot of folk rave about them and I was beginning to think I was mad.

That Rocky is gorgeous. Clean simple good design. Wonder how they ride. Same with the second gen Shockabilly.

Blimey, I only popped out to do some shopping in a thunder storm, and come back to all these suggestions!

Keep them coming guys 'cos it's giving me lots of ideas, though ultimately it will come down to what's available once I've got some cash...long wait then...

I can also highly recommend the King Kikapu Kona.Ive had one for years and it can still hold its own against modern full sussers. One of the very few early full sus that works in the real world.
