Recommend me a really good waterproof jacket

I know the sun is currently blazing, but during my week in Scotland last week, I did have one wet day (or by Scottish standards, slightly damp), and it got me thinking about jackets.

I have a few jackets, from dhb boil in the bag waterproof to my Castelli weatherproof. I bought the Castelli as it is waterproof and breathable, in truth, the breathability relies almost entirely on a couple of massive zip vents, and last week in 16 degrees and continuous rain, I got as wet from sweat as I would have done from the rain if I'd not been wearing it.

So; is there such a thing as a waterproof breathable jacket for cycling? Or do those of us who sweat like a bucket with a hole in it just have to put up with getting wet and having to continuously wash our jackets after almost every ride.

I have an Endura eVent jacket which is fantastic in winter rain, but even though it is just a shell it is too much for summer days for me. For summer rain I go for a lightweight pertex. Will keep you dry in light showers but if it gets heavier rain you get wet. The great thing is it drys really quickly. Currently using one of these.

A search should find one for less than £40.

Re:

Some good links there, thanks.

I have a lightweight windproof shower jacket that is actually very breathable, but there then seems a massive jump in price and technology from showerproof / water resistant to waterproof.

Maybe I should look at some of the running gear, as that has to cope with similar conditions and requirements.

THM, I recognise that bike; where did you have that self portrait taken?

Re:

I have an assos one which is superb. It was expensive but is still in service after many years so worth the money when the weather turns.

Kept out a lot of rain during the lejog.

Re:

I am entirely unconvinced by any claims of breathability and waterproofness. That's after spending 250 quid on a top-end hiking/climbing jacket too.

After the goretex started flaking off I sold it and bought a 20 quid Mac-in-a-Sac which was, a couple of features aside, literally just as good.

I use a lot of GORE-TEX®, have done for many years. It is excellent gear, but you do need to be active to keep it working. My carry always kit includes a Berghaus Extrem GORE-TEX® Paclite jacket. Great kit, very light and relatively hard wearing. Fine for upright cycling stance too.
