rear hub question regarding swapping out axles

My CODA 500 series hubs have finally had enough :(
So i bought some CODA 800 series hubs :)
The 500's were cup and cone, the 800's are cartridge.
But more frustratingly, the 800 rear hub appears to be from a road bike and has an OLD of 130mm.
The frame (Cannondale M400) will squeeze onto the 800 hubs, but i'm uncomfortable asking 22 year old aluminium to change shape permanently.
I've seen the little adapters to extend 130mm hubs to 135mm, but thought a better solution might be to replace the axle in the 800 hub with the axle from the 500 hub.
A 2.5mm washer either side seems neater than an adapter.
But, aside from the intricacies of getting the hubs apart.....
Does anyone have any experience of swapping a 'road' axle for a 'mountain axle'.
It looks like it should work, but any first hand knowledge would be much appreciated.

Yes, I've done it a fair few times on MTB hubs, generally converting M730 to fit later frames.
Keep the cones with the hubs and don't mix them. Take up all the extra onto the left hand side, your wheel will thank you for having less dish. Some 10mm washers from B&Q are OK for spacers.

Re:

If one is cup and cone and the other is cartridge, I don't think they'll be compatible? 2.5mm each side is the easiest way to do it, 5mm on the NDS and mice everything over a little to get better BBVA dish will also work, but is more work

Re:

Many thanks for the input.

Regarding the hub construction:

800's appear to be cartridge bearings.
But the 'end cap' screws down onto the hub via the threaded axle (making me think it is possible to swap axles).
I have some 900 series hubs as well.
They are cartridge bearings, but a different construction - the type that you 'undo' them by inserting an allen key into the end of the axle.
I use one of the little adapters that i mentioned previously on the 900's.

Just the look and feel of the 800's is superior to the 500's, but the axle looks the same (apart from being 5mm shorter.....

Re:

I've done this once or twice. The axle swap should be fine, you should be able to use the spacer washers from your old hub along with the cones from the new hub, creating the desired 135mm spacing. Assuming the cones are the same size.

You may need to redish the wheel afterwards if it isn't sitting centred between the drop outs. That's easy too, simply reduce the tension on the spokes one side by a quarter turn, and tension the opposing spokes by the same amount. Repeat until centred.

Re:

Thanks again.

I will try getting the hub apart and then see how everything looks.

The mechanical side of things is not my strong point :|
