Raleigh Panasonic Gran Course 531c

Re:

Hope it's ok in the top tube length for you?

I have noticed that Merckx frames seem comparatively short in that respect

It's relatively short in the top tube, 57cm.
I'm very comfortable on my 753, 59.5 ctt with 58cm top tube. I keep convincing myself it's only another inch!

Is it a crit frame - short top tube and only one set of bottle bosses?

Unless it's changed BITD Crit = Criterium. A circuit race with a short lap of around a mile. Around a city centre, trading estate or park with the bollards and trees protected by a bit of string or soft spectators.

There were prizes for various laps coming first, bottle of Blue Nun, pair of toe straps, bonk bag, packet of fags etc but rarely money. Given that the laps were short it was more about sprinting at the right time and not being trapped. To combat this there was lots of weaving about (called switching) and falling off. The Spectators were usually packed at the worst corner for a crash and sometimes at the finish line.

As there was a lot of out of the saddle work and jumping between groups what was needed was a "track bike with gears" hence the short wheelbase and top tube. Drinking was troublesome (driest is fastest) so only one bottle or none at all.

I was utterly hopeless at circuit racing being a time trial guy but rode them as I just liked riding a bike :)

A Kermesse was a circuit race that had a longer circuit and was more like a road race along the same section of road a few times.

Maybe all has changed and is different now/ :)

Thanks for the detailed explanation. All that accords with my recollections as well.
As far as I have been able to ascertain all Gran Course's were built to this tight, Criterium geometry.
And according to Raleigh's 1985 sizing chart 62cm is spot on for me

I've had this lump since 1985 and done many thousands of miles, she still runs well and is well loved & well used.
Long gone are the Campagnolo hubs & GP4's and now fitted with more robust wheels/tyres.

Hope you intend to ride the Raleigh when it's finally built up ? What type of rims will you be fitting ?

Hello Ian. Your's still looks very nice after all these years.
Still not decided on Groupset, which will obviously influence wheels. Favourite is probably DA 7400 as I have most of it, but not hubs. Ideal would probably be DA uniglide hubs with MA 40 red labels, I'm thinking I would prefer clinchers. I do have some Blue SSC Rims that would suit it as well though.
It will certainly be a rider, if not as frequently as I would like these days.
