Raleigh Frame NOS 753 Reynolds

As per the guidance please keep commentary on pricing to a minimum. Don't recall seeing a NOS SBDU 753 frame sell before so it's hard to gauge value.

See no reasons to doubt authenticity on this.

What John says

...and Roadking, if you have a NOS frame for 500 for me, I take it from you. Size 59 please.

An opportunity for me to be pernickety here...strictly speaking there's no such thing as a NOS SBDU frameset.

They were made to order - not for stock, unless in the unlikelyhood that a dealer ordered a standard size frame in the hope that he would sell it.

A big unlikelyhood. Oh, and by the way 753 is not thicker walled than 531! This comment is from memory only; my own SBDU is in the rarer 531Pro tubing.

John, I am surprised: there are several reasons to doubt authenticity and that is the lack of a frame number(being specific the critical prefix) - examples shouldn't be needed but here they are -

reason #1. The wide availability of 753 stickers and Reason #2. No frame number.

guys, check oneschnark's bikes & his builds first, before you state your doubts. he's genuine and I'm sure he's going to tell the serial no. to the potential buyer.

Oneschnark aka Philippe has been a member here for a while. I've exchanged a few messages with him and have no reason to doubt he is anything other than genuine. Maybe we should give him chance to give a frame number, it's not neccesarily the norm to quote frame numbers although it does seem the done thing with these SBDU Raleighs.

A few points

1. It looks like a SBDU Raleigh. I'm no Raleigh expert (although I do have 2 SBDU frames) but I would have said even without seeing the decals that was a SBDU frame, mainly off the seat cluster and other details.

2. Where is 27.2 mentioned? Know 753 should be 27.0 although I think the latter frames were 27.2, these might've been the 753r ones though. Anyhow my 753 which predates this from memory had a 27.2 post fitted when it arrived.

3. If you were going to 'fake' a SBDU Raleigh which colour scheme would you go for? I'd pick the TI Raleigh team livery.

4. It is far from impossible someone that a SDBU should remain NOS. Perhaps a shop ordered it and it remained unridden. Perhaps a customer ordered it and it was never built. It's not like GOD personally ensured every bike was built and ridden, although I like to think he might have ;)

Anyhow, just to sum up, let's give the bloke a chance!

As i remember the bike shop on copley road in Doncaster(think it was smiths?) always had afew 753 frames for sale in the window for immediate sale.So maybe dealers did carry some as stock.I know this,as still being at school i used to walk by the shop every saturday and dream about owning one.The frames seamed to be there for an age and never sell.Every week the desire to own one got stronger but alas the paper round wages just wouldnt stretch that far!

Tricky thread to Moderate IMHO as it's getting off topic but for the Frame in question it deserves some discussion, especially as I always wanted one but could never afford one until now.......

Maybe the OP could start a new post with the complete info /pictures / frame number to lay to rest any doubt as to the provenance of the frame..

Shaun

PS I worked in a bike shop in the 70's and we would think twice about buying anything we couldn't sell as it was simply dead stock. Sometimes we bought stuff as a sort of "honeytrap" to bring people in or sell them something similar but that was unusual...

753

To be fair the seller is quite open about the frame number,it is 4***So is spot on it being a 1979 circa frame.

Worth every penny IMO

My final comment on this, and reiterating some points from my first post on this thread -

#1. It has some SBDU features, but then other Raleigh(LU)framesets have those.
#2. We have no frame number with the critical prefixes.
#3. SBDU frames were not generally made for stock.
#4. The image is poor and there's only one.
#5. Chainstay sticker is badly applied(I'd like to see that sticker as I am able to tell an original from those currently available).
#6. Where/who did the frame come from?

Now I would not claim to be an SBDU expert, but probably one of very few on this forum that ordered his frame (that I still own) with GO'D from Ilkeston and vividly remember discussions I had with him at the time and when I collected it. I also have a two friends that have SBDU frames that they bought new.

I have seen a frame like the seller's before, but have not been able to verify it's provenance(only have the owner's"word").

I also have the very rare SBDU catalogue - I've never seen another.

John says he knows this guy, well potential buyers do not and the seller should provide provenance with this frameset. I take any frame claiming to be 753 SBDU as suspect unless the provenance is clear.

Just like to be thorough - just like I would if for example it was a Gillot (there are many of these frames around that aren't what they appear).

Roadking.
