Retro Newbie
I have a 1993 Merlin Elevator suspension bike for sale. It is built up with XT derailleurs and hubs. Meanwhile, the shifters, cranks, and brakes are all LX. The fork is a simple Rock Shox Quadra 21. ControlTech stem and bar, Ritchey post...nothing special. I have the entire bike for sale, but I'm wondering if I would be wiser to strip it and sell it as a frame only. Especially since potential buyers in the UK (I'm on the other side of the pond) might not want to fork out the cost to ship an entire bike. Secondly, are the parts by themselves worth selling off? Everything is in great shape, and I know 1" forks are getting harder to find. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You'll usually realise more money by selling off the frame/forks/components individually, but you've got to factor in the extra time/hassle and the fact that you might have some stuff left over that doesn't sell.

That said, if it's mostly original kit on the bike it would be a shame to see it split...

With a site like this one I think that building the bike and finding the parts you want is half the fun.

With a sublime frame like yours it is likely that someone would want to match it with high end parts.

To buy it with lower end ones would be a waste of cash as you would end up splitting it down to just the frame anyway. . . . . if that makes sense.

You are prob right about the post too.

Thats just my opinion mind. :D

Split it - everything will sell on here...

I have far too many bikes/projects on the go (well, for the space I have available anyway...) but the build is the fun part so I don't want to get rid of anything yet. Trouble is, I doubt anyone would buy the finished bike/s for enough to recoup the cost of the build/s - most builds being very subjective and not to everyones taste...

That frame needs some bling on it.....the components whilst great as they are in fine condition are not shoring up the price as a complete bike.
For ease of selling I would split but don't expect heaps of money for the components

Agreed with all above. More work for you to strip and sell separately, but it will be better for you $$-wise (if you don't mind the time) and better for the buyers who would likely be interested in EITHER the mid-range parts or the nice nice frame.

I'd sell the frame separate from the rest.

great frame, cooking spec components

Price is subjective i paid a heck of a lot less for my merlin.

Splitting gets you most (if youre purly money driven)though is a PITA. the frame needs top drawer stuff to get the most - doing that now would likely lose you money though.

Whoa--I just check out your other thread. $4k seems way high.

I wouldn't be all that surprised if an Elevator frame in nice shape pulled around $2k on eBay, but there isn't much chance that the parts build could get close to making up that difference.
