So there there was this item on Ebay that i really wanted...nothing special..not bike related.

So the last few seconds I chucked in a proxy bid of £16.73....well at least I thought I did!!!

Anyway, I won the item, but for £17.87.....

Slightly confused, didnt think much of....must have hit a wrong number I thought.

I have just been checking back over recent purchases, giving feed back etc etc......

The proxy bid I put in was for... £1673.00. Ooops

Bloody good job no one wanted it so badly they put in a £1600.00 proxy!!!

:?

Yeah, you're lucky indeed. Good thing they work with "2nd bid + a small amount" rather than using your actual highest bid.

This happened to someone on here but ended up with 2 thinking the same thing and the bidding very quickly went skyward when he pressed the bid button
The sum was £500 and the member was thinking....NO ONE ELSE...

It was one of the macretro but the name shall remain hidden to save his total embarrassment.

My dad did the same when bidding on a vintage Norton motorcycle. He won the auction but paid far more than he wanted to. Turned out alright as he gave it a clean and sold it for a handsome profit.

Its that adrenaline when those final seconds tick by!!

Just had to make sure i punched the keys quick enough!!

I think ill concentrate a little more in future.

:D

A while ago I was reading through Ebay policies -as you do  - and this scenario was mentioned. They advise that you immediately rebid the amount that you intended to type. So I imagine that puts things right from the seller's perspective anyway and if there is any fallout over payment, you have it on there as corrected and puts you in the clear if it doesnt work out all hunky dory in the end like the examples above

Glad it turned out well..

Winning on eBay really is a simple process, your maximum bid, no matter when you place it should be the maximum you are prepared to spend on the item.

If you lose it - hey ho... Someone wanted it more... :D

 ....im glad you can laugh at it andy!.....it would have made for five expensive cans of gt85!.....

I uncovered a practice when I had my ebay shop. I never did this as I wasn't in it for profit but I noticed certain trends with other sellers & it happened to me on a few occasions.

if you have a couple of mates (or other ebay id's) who are willing to shill bid, you place ridiculous bids on in the last minute or two. regardless of the end bid the 'buyer' never gets the item & you make a second chance offer to the bidder who wanted it the most & you get their highest bid as payment.

for items with only 1 serious bidder this instantly gets you a good price on a rare / valuble item. i'm not sure if ebay have reviewed this policy yet but the 2nd chance always used to be the next in lines highest bid which seems slightly wrong if a shill is used against a lone bidder to up the price.
