a couple of years ago i got a proflex frame off ebay, here's the build thread from ages ago

after riding it a few times i decided to strip it so that parts could be used elsewhere, also i was never really happy with the paint. i had it done in black and grey/silver by a local powder coater but the quality wasn't great. the idea was to do it cheap to see if i liked the bike then if i did get it done properly by bob jackson at a later date.

also it wasn't just the paint, i didn't really like the two girvin forks i tried on it but i have just received from ebay a pair of orange 1996 Z1 bombers in pretty good condition, good enough not to respray them . . .

so comes the dilemma . . . again.

what colour should i get the frame done in to look good with the forks??!!

still have to decide whether to go original or not with my 92 explosif aswel!! have all the parts just can't decide on paint!

To go with orange - carbon grey or white. Or as it's christmas - green.


I've just bought a pair of Noleen (ie. Girvin) Crosslinks (sprung not elastomer); what are they like to ride? Any issues? Why are you getting rid of them?

i sold them ages ago, the proflex has been just a frame for a while, i never liked the build as it was a parts bin-ish build, i didn't feel any of it matched as such. but the main issue i had with the forks was that they were off a bigger frame and were also a 1" steerer with some shims to 1 1/8 which i was never really happy with but the main thing was that after i fitted the spring upgrade to the front (not pictured in that thread) they had more travel than normal and bottomed out and caused the linkage to hit, when i sold them they ended up on a 21" 1995/6 P7 and they worked fine.

thing is i liked the ride and i'm in a position to get the paint sorted so i might aswel get it organised!

like the white idea, main frame white, rear end silver maybe?

I don't think they made orange Z1s until 97 and you don't see many of them - 98s are much more plentiful. If it has 96 stamped inside the dropout, it's a 97.

Colour is such a personal thing, but personally I don't think black suits it. Admittedly it has no decals and all bikes look bad to me if they have no decals. But even so, I think black doesn't work.

My own preference is to definitely have decals, keep the decals original and paint the frame any colour you like that goes well with the original decals. It looked quite good before you stripped it actually.

the forks have 96 on the drop outs and the brace so yeah probably 97 but they are the typical bomber orange.

i don't like the black either and i never got round to sorting stickers, another thing i hate!

i like the ride and it deserves a good paint job!

might go down the magura route aswel, hs33's in yellow, i'm thinking some yellow in whatever stickers i have done, not complete yellow but as part of the design.

thoughts?

staying away from polishing!! :x i hate it!! polishing that is, love the look hate the effort/time spent


but orange forks then orange main frame i think would be too much orange in one place, the front, also getting a match could be hard and if it doesn't match it will then look awful, that's why i'm thinking what colour would go with it as opposed to trying to match it

does that make sense? :?

Yellow details and orange forks says blue frame to me. Red is too close, go to the opposite side of the colour spectrum.
