Something I have never done, had anything to do with and quite frankly know nothing about

Yellow paged and found a local well advertised company that advertises they do cycle frames etc.

Here is the reply

Shot blasting per hour is £35 + vat , Powdercoating is £85 per rack for gloss £90 for satin/matt. They advise to bring enough stuff to fill the rack to make it more cost effective. Thats the fixed price unless the blasting takes longer than an hour.

Does this sound about right? Anything I should ask?

Cheers

Sounds expensive to me.
I had frame and forks blasted and coated gloss white a couple of months ago for £30. Pearls and metalics are slightly dearer and no mention of having to fill a rack.
If you go for it make sure the blast medium is not too aggresive for a cycle frame, some of the industrial stuff is a bit savage. (can errode thin or ally tubes). Also ask if they mask and blank of the areas you don't want coating, threads, head bearing surfaces etc.
If they're non cyclists they probably won't have a clue what wants masking. :)

hmmm I was kind of thinking along the lines of all the threads coated and being about 3 inches thick

Just been mooching around different websites ... Range from £100 to £150 by the looks of it for full service

Give LSN coatings Castleford a ring for a guide price.
I know it's a long way to travel but that amount of money is a lot of fuel, well maybe not that much fuel.
They made a top job of mine.
Used them after reading some good reviews of them on't web.

Got bitten once before by a total plonker who blew my frame to bits and used the wrong colour, and that was after warning him that some of the tubes were less than 0.5mm thick.

have to agree with porkypaw , sounds a bit steep to me as well !! ive just had a frame and forks shot blasted , powder coated and lacquered for £45 :) well pleased with the results , if i were you i would shop around a bit or search on here, theres bound to be someone round your way that could do it for less and still give good results !

Sounds very expensive. My local powder-coaters strip, prep and coat for around £30 for a frame and forks.
High quality finish and all threads masked without the need to ask. The guy who owns the business was a keen mountain biker back in the day and often tries to idenify the bike he's working on. Good bloke. I've had seven frames done for myself and others in the last year.
Highly recommended.

Sounds way expensive to me. Mine cost about £50 + vat for a candy colour. Normal colours were cheaper (don't ask me the difference  )

Can't remember the name but they're in Bingley West Yorks and will accept posted items and send them back. I'll look the name up if you're interested. Cost a bit more then some but was a very easy job. Handed the frame over (still painted) and it came back like new, with all canti bosses, exposed tubes etc obviously masked off during the process. They defo know how to paint a bike frame.

Sounds like they're doing you mate. I recently had frame & fork shot blasted and powdercoated for £45, with threads masked. Some companies can be quite anal to 'one-offs' I noticed. I guess they dislike having to give up space in the booths and labor of cleaning out the guns. Try and find a cyclist-friendly one, even if it involves a visit to another city or town.

Cheers everyone ... Wow there really is a BIG price difference

Will keep hunting
