Politics and religion on general and off topic or not ?

All that's needed now is the "i'm being opressed!" reply, while you continue to browbeat anyone who disagrees with you. Oh, the irony.

Boy, did I call that one. Off to the lottery ticket kiosk. I'm on a roll.
Get one for me. You can choose the numbers...

For me, if the rules ask for no religion or politics, then it shows me that the admins are sympathetic towards keeping the forum a happy environment.

Threads / posts are read far more often than they are written, and it's not always wise to make decisions based upon responses from regular members or their posts / polls.

It's often the silent objector who is most offended.

What is comfortable for one man can be incredibly uncomfortable for another, so preventing overly controversial subjects, such as politics, religion, sex, drugs, swearing and so on ensures that harmony exists.

The biggest turn off for any member is to read something that offends them and be faced with objecting, and risking the consequences of that objection, or to feel they should reserve their opinion, and feel isolated.

The argument "If you don't like it, don't read it" is highly controversial, and a much better approach is "Don't write it if they don't like it", and the easiest way to decide who 'they' are, is to see who's name is above the door.

Forum rules are best observed, like them or not. The minute we don't respect them then the forum becomes a free for all and won't last 2 minutes.

If it was down to me, I'd ban the lot of you just in case.

I stand by freedom of choice and the fact that no one has to get involved if they find something distasteful, as what might be distasteful to one might be perfectly palatable to others.

But it exists even if everyone was totally politic to the best of their knowledge, there would be always someone who would object, so if someone has a point to make just make it and let the forum decide it's worth, for everyone has to be responsible for their own actions and through their actions they may actually learn something through other's response.

We do learn through interaction with others, well, most learn others just become more distasteful as fit's their need.

Still, at it are you, I understand from your comments elsewhere in response to mine and mine in particular you are trying to incite a problem, but I am sorry your efforts are wasted for you have revealed yourself to all and so you will be judged by all as undoubtedly I have been by those here that don't know me.

You are all a bunch of bloody loonies.

ah but we've taken over the asylum, it would be nice to have a seperate place for the bitching though...or perhaps a tag for the ones that are going to go to pot.

If you do want to avoid the drama, you can quite easily stay in the bikey sections or away from the obvious this is going to turn into a bitchy thread topics.

If it was decided that politics/religion were no go...that'd be fine and dandy too.

Oh FFS! What else would be left to argue about?
Maybe there should be a separate section for those that don't like being disagreed with, called "Group Hug" or some such fluffy, comforting lable, where you can all go to talk about your favourite subject...

This has run it's course. Locked.

Don't like to over moderate things and generally with the odd exception over the past 7 years there hasn't been the need. Paul however sums things up well below.

Bearing in mind this is a forum about cycling and more specifically old bikes then I guess there are more suitable places to debate about religion and politics etc.

In my opinion the internet probably isn't, and never will be, the best place to have such discussions as it's too easy to make inflammatory remarks (whether intended or not) and then hide behind the anonymity provided by a keyboard and an internet connection.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, from a moderating perspective at least, I'd rather such discussions and threads were minimal as they usually cause problems and end up upsetting somebody.

Threads and opinions can be ignored I suppose, but John and us mods are kind of obliged to check in on them.

I'd rather be reading about frame geometry and more important stuff like what colour valve caps people are choosing.

Not really. Politics and religion touch on many aspects of our day to day lives - if you're in the UK assume you may have seen the recent TV ad for R4 or whatever it was. Making a judgement call as to what is a political or non politcal thread would be impossible.

As for the idea of a 'Bear Pit' forum or similar no thanks. These just seem to foster extreme views. There are plenty of other forums and sites out there when you can write whatever you want and find people who'll agree with you...
