Politics and religion on general and off topic or not ?

The freedom of speech on websites argument is BS. There is no such thing here, or any other site for that matter (even 4chan). John owns the site. John makes the rules. If he decides he doesn't want you saying certain words, they get put into the filter. If he doesn't want you talking about a subject your post gets deleted, and if you continue, the ban hammer drops. That said, self moderation NEVER works on ANY site when politics and religion are fair game.

And we won't even start on the trolls making post after post after post on variations of the same thing solely to incite arguments.......

You got it in one, the only person here who has ultimate control is the site owner, not those who partake in free membership and usage to spout what they do. That being if the site owner is not happy, it is their prerogative to remove what they do, and I uphold that as a free user of their website.

As to words that are filtered, do you disagree with such action, or is it you are quite happy to see offensive words being used and with that ultimately encourage others to use offensive words because it will, having filters in place ensures we keep a reign on what we may say as some things aren't the best things to say as most of us do have the ability to say what we need to say without resorting to profanity and deliberate offence.

As to the subjects that some bring up and I am aware of what you are implying here and to whom it is aimed, again you have freedom of choice to view and get involved, it is the website participant's choice as to whether they get involved, it is not a requisite.

But if subjects are not to other forum participants taste, have you noticed what happens, no one or few comment and the subject quickly slides down to the bottom of the forum and off into history, gone so you know what to do if something is not to your liking, don't participate, don't even be curious and lurk as views to a particular subject keep it alive and kicking and in your case I assume ; annoying.

But understand something perhaps whilst some may spout what they do that some don't like, others also do the same in different ways which also irritates others as guess what, we are all flawed no one is perfect.

I love the way 'troll' is now being used to discribe anyone that individuals don't like on the internet in order to try and make them stand out for extra persecution.

Some people just have an interest in many things and want to discuss it openly. And again we can choose not to comment or get involved unless we really want to and it really shouldn't get to the stage of insults and saying people are trying to cause trouble just because they don't agree with you or back away from aggressive responses, i see that as a bullying tactic which is 'Trolling' as i understand it.

I've learnt a lot from other peoples opposing views, i won't always admit that  but for me what spoils things is when people pretend to take offence and over- react to try and discredit a view they are not happy with.

I guess some people can't stand the fact that other people have different opinions to them so they try and shoot it out of the water when things don't go their way.

I think the best suggestion i've heard so far is perhaps if possible to move general and off topic to the bottom of the page........but that's up to John.

Common practice these days. The people who use it improperly just make themselves look foolish anyway.

It is very near the bottom anyway. There's only FAQ's, an archive and the weight weeny stuff below it.

I have realised that if your on a forum of any type, there is ALWAYS someone on there with polar opposite views/opinions/persona etc. and chances are you will come across each other at some point. What you do next will decide how you come away feeling.

People who blatantly don't like each other should just ignore the appropriate posts.
There are people on here whose posts I just skip over except when they address me directly.
They may be perfectly nice people but, as happens in a walks of society, we just done get along.

Not sure if this version of phpbb has an ignore feature, I've certainly not found it. I think the up to date software has it though. Not that I've found that either

IDB1, that is too simple for some.

And others I understand thrive on stirring problems where previously there weren't any.

But alas there are all sorts in this society of ours, but at least there are many who can hold a reasonable conversation without resorting to verbal violence, they on the whole out number the problematic types as is evident, web forums where people come to chat still exist.

I have resorted to verbal violence at least once on here, possibly more.. and probably elsewhere. There are reasons, not excuses, but everyone is capable of acting out of character at times. But not all the time..

My opinion of you personally has nothing to do with you being q troll, pertaining to the intrrnet, and forums in particular. I'll save you the trouble of looking up troll as it pertains to forums.

from wikipedia:

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2]extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of
provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disruptiing
normal on-topic discussion.[4] The noun troll may refer to the provocative
message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted."

While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels
subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions and harassment outside of an online context. For example, mass media has used
troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."

So going by the above description, this thread, along with a vast majority of your previous, is a trolling thread, and you are trolling, so a troll. And please don't insult us by saying you had no intention of ddoing so. You knew damn well this latest post would start an argument.

All that's needed now is the "i'm being opressed!" reply, while you continue to browbeat anyone who disagrees with you. Oh, the irony.
